I remember back in the 1950s it was swank to have your name printed on matchbooks. People gave them out at patio parties, etc. Often the matchbooks were gold foil or some other festive colored foil. You could order them by the box. We had them in our den for guests.

When you use google to search for 828 S. Robertson, you find one side of the street is numbered in the 800's and the other side is in the 2 & 300's? Perhaps it's a demarcation between Los Angeles and Beverly Hills? Which might account for different phone numbers? Or maybe I'm still in a dither?

I was sure from the descriptions on these photos they had been posted on NLA previously, but I cannot locate any posts. I know that I've seen these before, though, somewhere. There was also a location at 425 S. Vermont Ave.

In the interim I found this older matchbook when the restaurant actually looked like a castle. (this matchbook looks familiar / seen before on NLA?)

Like Martin Pal, I believe we have seen bits and pieces of this story on NLA.

BUT I don't believe we have seen a photograph of the mid-century version of the Castle Restaurant (the one shown in the matchbook I posted yesterday)

I've been searching for old photographs of Avalon that show Catalina Jack's (and the Edgewater Hotel next door) but I haven't had any success. so far.
Earlier, I tried to find an old image of the Wilshire Blvd. location...that didn't go so well either.

The area has changed quite a bit, but those two buildings at center right in the b/w photo above -- now apparently

We have seen a plethora of decorated cars on NLA over the years( be it the La Fiesta Parade or the Rose Parade)
....but I don't believe we have seen this particular pic.

The description is a bit vague.

"1915 Los Angeles California Decorated Car Parade Photograph – J.A. Ramsey"

One thing that caught my eye was the Norman Cross, with the plain ol' cross in the center (and some letters as well), draped over the frame of the windshield.

Here's a closer look.

To me it looks like a Christian Fraternity of some sorts.

(my fraternity in college, Sigma Chi, utilized a Norman Cross as well.

Oh, I almost forgot...there are a few letters visible on the front of the car as well.

If you look closely....the car, exiting onto La Brea, is a Universal International studio car. Across the street, a cosmetic business, Selcano Cosmetics, has set up shop in a house.

I searched the thread for "Selcano" with 0 results. I also checked Los Angeles city directories but there is no listing for "Selcano Cosmetics" in any of the directories.

You'd think it would be imperative for a small business to be listed in the phone book. Go figure.

The car is a Cadillac stretch Limo...sometimes it was called an ''airport limo". I believe the year of the car is 1947.

No luck with Selcano either, but in 1934 masseuse Dolletta Ackerman would rub you silly there; around 1940, Mrs. Elsa Schreiber was running a beauty parlor there... could the S be for Schreiber and the EL for Elsa?

Is 1421 (née 1423) N La Brea still there? A demo permit for it was issued on March 16, 2018. Here it is late in the day, altered but stil there as of GSV Feb 2017...

odinthor, I think you have the correct spelling. To me, it appears that the watermark has covered parts of the "B" in the photo.
