Edmonton non-profit groups plan for downtown artists village

BY GORDON KENT, EDMONTON JOURNAL FEBRUARY 12, 2013

EDMONTON - Edmonton could soon have its own Quartet in the Quarters, under plans for a new downtown building expected to attract numerous senior artists as residents.

Unlike the recent Maggie Smith movie about a home for retired British musicians, the 64-unit Artists Quarters is intended to provide housing where young and old can work in their fields.

But Shirley Serviss, head of one of the non-profit groups behind the development, said Tuesday she has heard the comparison.

“I had someone mention it to me last night. She thought of our project all the way through (the film). I must confess I did too,” Serviss, president of Artists Urban Village, said with a laugh.

Public meeting last night, sounds like a late 2016 start.

More facade-ism.

IT looks in quite good shape, shame we can't restore it and do the tower beside it.

Also and importantly (but my guess is not sadly), are they going to retain the most awesome ads and incorporate them into this?

Condo tower for artists in Quarters gets green light

Arts groups proposing a tower of live-work units in The Quarters area of downtown Edmonton say the go-ahead from the city is a milestone, but the next step will be to win support from the federal and provincial governments.

Council approved a zoning change to permit the development in the neighbourhood during a public hearing at city hall Monday afternoon.

Looks better but I still find it weird there's only 4 balconies. Also not sure if that big blank wall in the recess is supposed to be lit up or transparent.

DP notice for the mixed use artist tower in the Quarters.

18 storey

Floors 1-4 - Arts Craft Council
5-18 - living - 64 units

Reconstruct the north and east facade of the Koermann Block.

*I am still not pleased about losing one of the best painted wall adds that remain in our city.

I am glad to see some projects move ahead in the Quarters, I just wish this building had more glass. It seems a bit institutional to me.

Was at Executive Committee yesterday and heard an update on this. They are about 15-30mil away depending on the scope. It was sent back to the team to review options, private/public, less parking etc. Report back this fall.
