Wow! So many good photographs on here. Nice to relive the trip I just took and makes me wish I could have stayed longer.

I was looking for some cool new pictures of the bats coming out from Congress and found this one I really liked.

Also happened upon this and thought it was pretty cool.

Where is this stop?

I ask because when I was a child, the old MKT depot was at the northeast corner of Third and Congress and the tracks ran right down third street. They had to back trains into the depot to keep from blocking Congress. Until roughly 1950, the Missouri Pacific Depot was catter-corner across Congress, but was moved to the present location of the Amtrak depot.

That is on 4th on the north side of the convention center. There is no 2nd or 3rd street between Red River and Trinity as the convention center is there now.

The rail goes from 4st Downtown to 5th & Comal => MLK => Highland => N. Lamar & Airport BLVD => Somewhere near the Domain => Wells Branch => Ceder Park => Leander.

Edit: was there ever a 2nd street between RR and Trinity? Did 2nd ever cross the creek? Or maybe RR recrosses the creek south of where it met 2nd? I can't remember.

Edit 2: Oh ya, RR crosses the creek near Iron Works so there probably was a 2nd from Trinity to RR.

I was looking for a picture of the old "Katy" depot and ran across one from a thread on this site that ran to 106 pages dealing with mass transit in Austin. Perhaps one of the mods could give a link to that site.

If you look at a Googlemaps/StreetView picture of the old Missouri Pacific bridge just west of downtown, you can see how the tracks once veered off to the right down 3rd to the two depots. There is even an old bridge over what I guess is Shoal Creek. I used to take the train to Austin when we lived in San Antonio, but I usually took the Missouri Pacific and can't remember exactly how the Katy made it into Austin and to the depot.

Nice pics.

Joe, I like that one of Frost with The Austonian peaking over the podium.

And nice capture with the skyline from the flyover. They're finally getting that thing finished. From the highest bridge, you're about level with the tops of 300 foot buildings in downtown. This is because downtown sits at one of the lowest areas of the city. That area of South Austin where that flyover is is probably around 200 feet higher in elevation than downtown is. And the flyovers themselves are almost 150 feet tall.
