Make the white outlines cream and it's an acceptable compromise.

damn it! there's still something about the thin white borders juxtaposed with the giant swath of cream that i don't like... maybe lose the white borders (again) or shrink the star a little? or both? or none? obviously keep the beer guy though.

It's too busy. I get that the lines represent the river, but how about keeping the creamy star, eliminate all the lines, green on the left for land, blue on the right for water, and beer stein guy in the creamy center?

^ knock yourselves out, guys.

i started redesigning the flag by mashing together pieces from the originals to placate the people who thought the original finalists were all too simplistic. i was specifically trying to make it more complex and busy; i'm not going backwards.

Detroit still has some fight left in it. That's more appropriate for Toledo, Cleveland or Cincinnati

Why don't they just make their flag a fat dude in a harness, with a beer helmet on, who gets hoisted up the flag pole every day?

Personally I like this design i posted in the sky at thread on city flags which ironically includes the new old flag (which of course has the old old flag on it) as a city crest. Technically inclusion of a crest is not terrible flag design.

highly intricate and jumbled designs with literal imagery and lettering (such as milwaukee's current mess of a flag) are the very antithesis of what a good flag should be.
