I think they should widen the river west of Congress to Mopac.

That would be pretty interesting. A lot of public and private property would be wiped out, and the process would create enough chaos to provide years of entertainment. It's a great idea, really. We generally assume that the only way to increase density (people per unit of land) is to increase population. We need to consider the denominator --- reduce that, and your density goes up even without any population increase! That is, unless the area turns into a Sausalito type of situation, full of houseboats. Which would also be interesting. Maybe that would be a good way to house the homeless. Line the lake with piers leading to all manner of houseboats, with no zoning restrictions. That would keep Austin weird for a while.

Drove by there this evening. Did not see a crane. Very little excavation has been done. It kind of looks like the ZaZa site right now, and that kind of worries me. Anybody know what's up?

I spoke to a Sackman yesterday at our neighborhood meeting. She presented an overview of the building they are developing on S Lamar. She said Rainey was still moving forward. They have 4 projects in Austin now.

Just drove by the site. Lots of construction trucks appearing to do some prep type work.

Their Facebook page says they're planning an August 2nd construction start date.

So here we go...3 of my most anticipated buildings, this, 5th and West, and the Independence, all ushering the next phase of quality, skyline game changing highrises. Can't wait to see these go up together.

It is awesome, isn't it? Three new towers that will all have a major impact on the skyline! A new tallest, and two other towers that are 450' plus. This not even including the Fairmont that will be over 450' without the spire and almost 600' with the spire.

The skyline will look much larger by the time 2018 rolls around.

Yeah, it is awesome...sometimes I think it would be cool to close my eyes and open them around 2018. Unlike when the building formally known as the Legacy which went up incredibly quickly, construction is usually sooooooo slooooow. 70 Rainey and the Fairmont for that matter are bringing quality height to this part of town and I35.

I was looking at the site plan for this one to make sure nothing had changed, and it appears it has. This was originally shown in the 2013 site plan to be 472 feet with 35 floors.

Anyway, they released another site plan that is still dated 2013, but it looks like it was altered. The elevations show it to be 416 feet with 34 occupied floors.

The "new" elevations are files 28(1) and 29(1).

https://www.austintexas.gov/devrevie...erRSN=11317342

If it's true that the height was reduced, that would be significant. It would drop it from the 7th tallest to the 11th tallest - going from as tall as the W to just 4 feet taller than Ashton.

Still not bad though. I would rather have it than not.

That would be almost 60 feet for one floor!! Wonder if they are changing the top part then.

Didn't someone warn us that Sackman doesn't live up to their "word?" They end up building shoddy towers?

It seems the entire façade has changed too. Even the ceiling of the amenity level is not as impressive as originally planned.

This looks like a really dumbed-down version of a very tower...should these changes be true to form.

I hope those who "bought" into the tower before these changes can still get out (if they choose) financially unscathed.

*EDIT: It seems as if they have shortened each floor by a little over a foot (from 12' to 10'10" - for most floors).

So lower ceilings. That's where the height went. At least the design may end up being about the same, albeit shorter.

I didn't notice earlier, but the lowest elevation is 2 feet below the 0 line, so it's actually 418 feet 8 inches tall to the mechanical penthouse. And it appears there are only 33 occupied floors. I'm not sure if there's an amenity floor above the main roof or not. There is a "level 34" but that may only be calling the roof that.
