Cool CHICAGO | Lucas Museum of Narrative Art

And the images are out!

Quote:
Lucas Museum design an architectural mountain on city's lakefront

If you expected filmmaker George Lucas to give Chicago a low-slung museum that would slip quietly into the fiercely contested ground of the city's lakefront, I have news for you: You expected wrong.

A conceptual plan for the proposed Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, revealed Monday, sketches a far more ambitious vision from the "Star Wars" creator: A curvaceous, nearly windowless mountain of a building, topped by a glassy observation deck that would resemble a flying saucer.

It's different. That building legitimately looks like something from a Star Wars movie...

theres nothing about it that looks inviting. its just a big amorphous blob of concrete. brutalism for the 21st century.

The entrance to this building will make or break it. But mostly I really like it. It is like nothing else the city has right now. This will look especially awesome sitting right next to the space ship that landed on Soldier Field.

Does anyone have any closeup renderings? Or are the ones in the Trib the only ones we have?

It's buildings like the Lucas Museum that make me think that I could have been an architect. From the first couple renderings, there's really nothing appealing about nor does it stand out in any sort of way. Looks like something the city would store salt in. Feeling quite underwhelmed by this one.

Need more images... These renderings are useless, need to see a floorplan or axon. At least a bird's eye rendering...

Seems like this building is a giant skirt, and all the interesting stuff is at the hem around the edge. Also plenty of good stuff inside... . The renderings we have just show the central part, which is pretty featureless except for a few eyebrow windows.

I'm in the "meh" camp. Reminds me of a more free form, out-of-control Yurt.

Yeah, I think it needs work. Not that impressed. Does anyone else think this project should get its own thread?

These renderings create intrigue if nothing else. I'm excited to see future floor plans and the pushback from the community.

Nobody's mentioned it here yet, but this building is supposed to be clad in real stone... Gizmodo said "blocks of stone" like the Great Pyramid. I wonder how long it will take for that to get VE'd out....

Conceptually it sounds like they are trying to make the building a giant thermal mass that uses passive principles for heating/cooling, so maybe they can pay for the stone with savings from mechanicals.

Didn't Lucas tell Rahm Emanuel, "I have to warn you, I want something bold, something avant-garde"

....well?

As a layman, I see today's attempts to try and be novel and abstract as very conventional. White freeform has been done over and over, and the freeform isn't that free; it's just imitations of what everyone's been doing.

Far from iconic.
