Planning a visit? Take advantage of the motor coach curb-to-curb service. Conservative dress recommended and try to bring correct change.

I took my mother to Salon Pure (formerly The Owl Barber Shop) a few years back. I didn't know of its history at the time . It is a really cool design that they have created with the exposed pipes, kind of a steam punk motif. It still screams Noir inside. If you can, get down there and check it out! Really cool place!

I did some research ER. Generally these signs are meant for a street where kids gather and drive their shiny cars round and round for attention. This was a big problem in the 1980s....not so much now in 2013. These signs are nationwide and have been legally challenged ....unsuccessfully.

There are a few of these signs near parks but I did hear that they're posted for a different reason.

This is how it works.....cool, eh? Watch the short 20 second video.

Take the lighter stick out and press the tip down on the middle plunger. That activates the flint that lights the wick of the lighter stick. Ingenious and super noir.

...somewhere on Slauson Ave.

I decided to search out this building. I found it on the 900 block of Slauson just west of South Central.

There are long gone railroad spurs in the area.

We've seen many photographs of the Brown Derby on Wilshire, but I don't remember one taken from this odd angle.

That's the Ambassador Hotel across the street.

A wonderfully noirish photograph of the Fourth Street Bridge.

http://east-of-west-la.tumblr.com/image/50426067982

I couldn't quite tell what part of the bridge I was looking at, so I backed the google-mobile out of the garage and headed for Fourth Street.

This is the far west portion of the bridge where it crosses Mateo Street & Santa Fe Ave.

Just a guess, the "6" may refer to an advertised interest rate, i.e., "6%." Modernly, it could be advertising the number of available parking spaces, or the average wait time (in hours) to obtain a parking space.

No date or location. (Pea gravel or worn macadam?)

Notice the red Hotel Adelphia sign over the front entrance. I bet it hasn't lit up in over 60 years.

I was wrong.

This give me hope that the giant A on the roof might light up some day too.

Could that be Olympic stars Sonja Henie and Herman (Bruce Bennett) Brix flanking the sign?

I'm so happy that you posted this photo. I took a picture of the Owl about 1989 or 90 when I was running around downtown looking for the Rosslyn and generally on a noir blitz. I thought it was the noirist thing I'd seen all day.

I was standing across the street at Cole's. There was actually a fellow in the front chair getting his ears lowered so I felt like a tourist and didn't want to get closer- both he and the barber were really cool looking guys though.

Also, that cocktail ring watch is amazing.
I remember this Barber shop! it was in the Sarah Mclachlan's Video ADIA Go up to 1:38 in the video you'll c the entire Barber shop!

I don't think that is Sonja, but that could be Herman Brix/Bruce Bennett. Didn't he win a silver in the 1928 games?

I used to get my hair cut in a small shop on Second St. between L.A. and Main in about 1958 to 62. The barber was Ben Cortez, he was a friend of my father that's why I went there. I would have him square it off in the back which was the style for us teens at the time. This was a dark Victorian building if I remember correctly close to St. Vibianas.
