Check out the webcam at www.425parkave.com

Just scroll down to the bottom of the page, it's already almost as tall as it used to be, and will be getting its first bits of curtain wall sometime in June, apparently. Your favorite tower is in good hands, I'm happy to see that its reincarnation is finally coming along so well, after seemingly going nowhere for so long.

(In actuality, a lot of work was going on inside the building that wasn't apparent from the street, like installing temporary wind bracing among many other things)

I remember giving this tower a hug shortly before they cocooned it and started taking its upper half down. I can't wait to see it in its new form

As much as I like 425 Park, you can’t escape 432 Park.

Way I See It:

This Beautiful Doll: 892'

Nearest Frame of Reference: 550 Madison/Sony/AT&T: 647'

I'd say the new superstructure in that pic makes the overall tower almost 1/2 done.

425 Park Avenue’s Façade Installation Begins As Construction Nears Halfway Point, Midtown East

Quote:
The Foster + Parters design for 425 Park Avenue’s revamp is making major progress. The Midtown office building will be aesthetically divided into three sections, with proportions defined by the remains of the formerly extant structure, which comprise its lowest floors. Thanks to Tectonic, we can confirm that the new tower is now making the transition from its second section into the final, vertical rise. Construction has 22 floors left until topping-out, or just over half of the 41 total floors that will result.

On the lower floors, the façade is starting to go up, giving a glimpse at how the curtain wall and metal panels look. Admittedly, they are in shade, but they still are surprisingly dark. Perhaps with direct sunlight on the higher floors, it will more closely resemble the bone-white ribbing we were introduced to with the renderings.

While the three dramatic concrete fins by Foster + Partners do add a unique look to the skyline, the building will also be remembered for what it isn’t. In competition, the building had been chosen over a Zaha Hadid submission, with which much of the public had fallen in love.

The 893-foot tall building will yield 670,000 square feet within. Office tenants will benefit from a 45-foot tall lobby, high ceilings, an integration of ambient light, bicycle parking with changing rooms, and energy efficiencies to address environmental issues.

The fins will be a welcome addition to the skyline, specially with the lighting at night. But I can wait, sooo much eye candy to take in honestly! We are seriously blessed and spoilt (NYC specifically).

I noticed on the webcam that the building was starting to get a bit of its curtain wall. It's so much lighter and sleeker than the brick facade it used to wear, I can't wait to see more of it, I think this building's been hanging out naked long enough

I'm hoping the fins are as brightly illuminated at night as in the renderings.

Great shot, chris08876.
We can clearly see that the fins will be added later on.
This tower is taking shape nicely!

...and I love buildings too. I just think it's great that you hugged the old building before they tore it down.
