The massing is similar to ESB, so you may be on to something

The park side of this tower is looking great.

Unfortunately, I find of the sides of this tower messy and inexcusable. Stern can do better.

^Agreed. Wtf is the thought process behind the lack of symmetry? Was it Structural?

It's bizarre and it makes me cranky. But it's done now. Moving on.

I wanna hear from the designer's mouth why that is. It's odd. However, it honestly does nothing to like this tower less than I do. The overall quality is beyond most modern "throwback" towers.

What's hard to understand? The lazy, obvious thing to do is to make the window pattern uniform, that's why placeholder renders of the tower look like this:

Especially since this is basically a flat box with hardly any depth and setbacks, you end up with an inert design that you can absorb immediately. Asymmetry does a few things, it makes you look up and down the facade to absorb what's going on, it differentiates levels, it allows for different floorplans (if you want to see problems with a regular facade, look at 432 Park Ave where a bathroom is the same size as a bedroom), etc.

^ A good architect can or should be able to deal with that conflict. Certainly windows visible on the outside don’t actually need to be windows on the inside. That’s often the case in offices where tenants have spec’d their own floor plans.

That said, the classic NY apartment buildings were often not symmetrical either, and that is Stern’s milieu. Just look at 740 Park:

That's funny because people were bellyaching about the wall of fake windows on the south facade, calling Stern a hack for it.

Interior work has taken quite a long time of this and still continuing. Can only conclude that there is some uber-luxury decor and elements going on in the interior. A borderline sculpture this tower is. Its aim to replicate with a modern twist the luxury of the 1920's is a success.

I am an architect and believe it is the opposite. A good designer won't make a facade look like a mess because of changing interior plan changes. I find 432 Park impressive in its simplicity.

You're entitled to your opinion. You're wrong, but you're entitled to be.

If you look at the late '20s and '30s towers that this tower is based on, a lot of them have window placement variance like this. Especially on their rear and side facades.

Stern has said before that he likes how the variance looks on the facade. But we all know the real reason is to better align the windows for what's happening on the interior.

Agreed on the basic reasons for lack of uniformity in regard to fenestration, especially on point with the "individual residence owner" argument.

In fact, if you look really carefully at post #1070, you might find that even the window dimensions in those floors where they seem to line up are slightly different.
Specifically, look at the four square column to the right where Nordstrom's cladding ends at a right angle.

Now squint and tell me if you see how small those differences I cite are.

I hope Barnett is feeling some shame at seeing the beautifully lighted crown of 220 CPS next to his One57 which evidently had its crown lighting value-engineered out. Sorry. No excuse for that omission.
