oh boy look what ny yimby has for us for this development today -- the old sugar warehouse reboot and the northern tower are under way and the waterfront park and esplanade should be opened soon --

^ That playground design is really cool. Not often that you see a lot of thought go into details like that.

Its a smaller waterfront skyline for Williamsburg but part of what I view as a much larger skyline developing along the East River.

You have the Domino Development, and heading upstream along West Street, you have a lot of parcels ripe for development (all nearby WNYC Transmitter Park) aka Greenpoint. Moving further along, you have Hunters Point Phase I and II.

If you factor in the developments near Court Street station, and the further march towards the East River or Western flank development in LIC... what you have in the making, once infill occurs, is a large skyline in the making.

Overtime, sort of the Brooklyn/Queens Gold Coast (along the E.River waterfront and merging towards the LIC cluster).

Two Trees’ waterfront park at Domino Sugar Factory mega-project opens

Quote:
There’s a new factory up and running at the site of one of the world’s most prolific sugar refineries; it’s a play structure, designed by Mark Reigelman, inspired by the machinery that used to be operate in the nearby Domino Sugar Factory until 2004.

The new park by James Corner Field Operations stretches out along the Williamsburg waterfront facing the Manhattan skyline in front of the landmarked factory. The public green space opened to the public on June 10 complete with elevated walkways, a taco stand run by Danny Meyer and a brand new themed playground, according to Curbed.

Led by Two Trees Management, the park and larger complex, which will eventually include a renovation to the original factory that still stands and four newly-constructed buildings, is being redeveloped into a 11-acre complex that already includes one residential building, 325 Kent Avenue, which is a rental property that opened last year.

The entire mixed-use project is estimated to cost about $3 billion. In April, M&T Bank, Wells Fargo and JPMorgan Chase purchased $175 million in taxable bonds issued by the New York State Housing Finance Agency for one of the new buildings — a conjoined 42-story residential tower and 22-story office building estimated to run up a bill of $309 million.

This is a great park. I still prefer Gantry Plaza/Hunters Point South Park. It's a shame that we have the Big Allis power plant on the Long Island City waterfront preventing there ever being a continuous riverfront greenway along the East River from Queens to Brooklyn.

The perforated metal panel (Corten?) on the base fits in great with the neighborhood, color/texture-wise.

I couldn't snap a picture, but extensive window placement along the pediment has occurred on the Kent street side of this building.

I know nothing of this project, so would anyone care to tell me what the plan is for the old factory building? Will it be repurposed into residential or commercial use? It's gotta be awesome inside.
