Exclamation NuScale Balance Moving in to Build Small Model Nuclear Reactors; Vendors Day

OR-based NuScale Power has received a matching grant from the DOE for $217 Million to start their work at or near INL to build Small Modular Nuclear Reactors. This is a 9 year project to build the first 12 small reactors. Fluor is the major investor in NuScale. Fluor wants to build these small reactors to sell.

Intermountain Energy Summit will be held in Idaho Falls on Aug. 19- 20. NuScale will be there for potential suppliers and vendors to learn what NuScale will need to build these small module nuclear reactors.

Here's a link to the Energy Summit. There is a link for companies who may want to know more about future vendors.

http://www.intermountainenergysummit.com/index.html

The estimated cost of NuScale building around INL is $ 2.2 Billion.

Good news Idaho is one of the top Hop and Barley producing states so hopefully this industry continues to grow within the state.

I was just in St. Louis and did the Anheuser-Busch brewery tour for the second time. It was good to hear them mention Idaho twice, as they get both their hops and barley from our state. Idaho was the only state where they get both ingredients from.

That's nice to know Jim. Yes, both Anheuser-Busch and Group Maldanodo seem to be satisfied with the barley they've gotten so far.

A bit of topic but Idaho also has the worlds largest hop farm up between Bonners Ferry and the Canadian border.

http://www.bonnersferry.info/index.cfm?app=49

Quote:
Ten miles from the Canadian border, north of Bonners Ferry, Elk Mountain Farms grows hops for parent company Anheuser-Busch. Elk Mountain is the world’s largest hop farm at 1,800 acres. The farm was first planted in 1987 and only traditional German hops are grown here from root stock that originated in Europe. The U.S.-Canadian border is on the same latitude as the prime hop-growing regions of Europe, and gets 16 hours of sunlight in the summer.

Interesting Cottonwood. Thanks for posting.

I know this is aimed at building and we're happy with new buildings, expansions etc. too. However, the reality is Agriculture is still big business in ID.

ID vodkas are getting more demand than ever. The Distillery in Teton County is remodeling with a sampling room. As one would expect, ID potatoes are used; hops and barley for national and international beer and the products from Treasure Valley for Idaho wines.

Of course there are the traditional food markets for ID crops. It's awesome to see new buildings, but it's even better to have more of the economy expanding!

Maybe this should go in the general ID thread as I don't know if all appreciate the various alcohol made in ID. I'm a big believer in supporting ID products whenever possible.

Agreed. I read somewhere that Idaho is poised to knock out Oregon soon as the second largest Hops growing state. Our wine regions in the Treasure Valley and up north are world class and decorated with competition medals, and world class Vodka's are being produced in the heart of Mormon country (oh the scandal) in SE Idaho and by other companies in non Mormon country near Boise, and America's first distillery pub is in Boise on the Basque Block.

Frankster,

Thanks for the post. The Idaho Falls Post Register followed up on that story. For many years many in Idaho Falls thought the average income was too low.

This article was the first to include INL salaries. The deseret part of INL is considered Butte County. Consequently, all those commuting from Idaho Falls were not having their salaries included in I. F. incomes.

Without a doubt medical is becoming very sub--specialized and the demand for certain specialists and mid-levels is higher than ever.

The problem with the article, is unless one has training for the specialized INL jobs or Medical providers and technicians, the article is a bit misleading for the average worker. Science still pays in Idaho Falls

I would love to see ID replace OR with Hops and most other positive things I guess we've learned to adjust and mostly appreciate our newer neighbors from CA and WA.

I'll say this is just my opinion, although I know it is not.
The transplants from OR seem to be different than the other states. Maybe as more OR businesses either relocate to the east side of Idaho, or open stores/offices here, we'll see some change. I've lived in various states and have never seen anything like it.

One of my good friends, who lives in OR, explained some of why many from OR feel and act superior to ID residents. I'll only list two important points from that discussion:

1. No one deserves or should tolerate verbal, emotional, physical and/or sexual abuse. No man, woman or child deserves to be abused.

2. Closely related to my first point, only those with low self esteem try to put another person down. Temporarily that makes the abusive one feel briefly a little better about him/herself to trash another.

It makes me wonder if OR companies who are doing more business in Idaho are transferring some of their "troubled" employees to Idaho. I am serious.

We had monsoon rains here just as our grains, including Malt Barley were ready to be cut. Extremely, hot and dry weather about a month prior.

As a result, farmers from Twin Falls all through Southern ID to the Montana border have had extreme crop loss. Not sure if 33-50% can be salvaged or not.
Apparently, this happened (I was told) in the late 60s too.

Aug. has been a LONG month. Didn't know if others in ID were aware of the severe crop loss. I hope the Hops are ok

Thumbs up Gem Airlines I.F. - Boise starting 2 days/week.

Our never ending problem of having an airline connect Idaho's two largest airports (Boise and Idaho Falls) has a new participant enter.

While not the permanent solution, Gem Airlines who is a charter company in Salmon, is going to start flying between Idaho Falls and Boise twice daily only on Wed. and Thursdays. However, based on demand, more days may be added. This starts 10/01/2014.

Two interesting parts to me about this announcement. The IFRA knows passengers will not fly if it costs > $150 one way. Driving is cheaper.

These are charter planes and will use FBO Aero Mark instead of the terminal. They will seat 9 people.

2. Given how the information was released, I know there are ongoing discussions with other airlines with larger planes to agree to this logical east-west connection in the state. But, I think some other things have to happen for one to commit.

So good for Gem Airlines for stepping up and trying to help. If anyone needs to fly, please patronize them if possible. I have zero financial connection, rather I see how not having that air service hurts the state, business and even leisure travel.

Hobby Lobby and Broulims to be near Cabela's.

In documents filed last week, Hobby Lobby and Broulims (regional e. Idaho and a little w. Wyoming) plan to build in the new Development on the southeast corner of Hitt and Sunnyside.

Still waiting for 3 tenants to be named. But we'll see if Broulims might change who is willing to locate there. I called them documents as they filed protections, restrictions and other papers about building there. Maybe that is normal but I've never heard of as many requests, protections with the specific areas to be protected. I've requested more information. Will update as we learn more.

Modular Credit Union -A First for ID

An interesting first for Rexburg and Idaho. This modular building will be used throughout the state. Check it out as MACU is building rapidly on the east side of ID.

Cool Hilton Home2Suites Construction Started

I don't claim to understand why getting all the tenants signed and named for the Sand Creek Commons, where great progress on Cabela's is occurring, is taking so long. D. L. Evans is wasting no time getting their branch built there.

I still think the demands, requests of some businesses has changed the interest from some of the retailers initially named as probable tenants.

Fortunately, building has completed on the Smith Chevrolet and Honda dealerships. Broadway Ford's is coming along nicely as well as some retail construction in Skyline at the northwest corner of Broadway and Skyline. An old strip mall was gutted and totally new buildings are being built.

Snake River Landing continues to attract more businesses. Construction of the $6.0 million Hilton Home2Suites has started. Some of us in the area can't really grasp how a 91 hotel room and space to park for guests and staff can occur in the area fenced off for it. That discussion resulted in a direct answer from B & T Hospitality sharing this link.

Check it as the hotel is being built they will be posting the best pics

I was over in the homeland of Idaho Falls last week for a quick day and saw a lot of good things happening in the historic downtown. Downtown I.F. has a lot of potential and has some great bones to build on with blocks upon blocks of beautiful history and architecture and narrow streets and the river front and the new downtown developments on the other side of the river.

I got to thinking, downtown I.F. does not have the amount of tallish modern buildings compared to a similar sized downtown such as Provo, UT for example, but downtown I.F. feels more dense, walkable and even urban in this comparison. So does Nampa and in some respects Pocatello and Twin Falls and for sure Coeur d’Alene. One thing a lot of Idaho towns have in common are rather impressive historic downtown’s.

Here's to a bright future for historic downtown Idaho Falls

Have you also learned that secret from the river; that there is no such thing as time? That the river is everywhere at the same time, at the source and at the mouth, at the waterfall, at the ferry, at the current, in the ocean and in the mountains.-Hermann Hesse
