She plays a very noirish character in "The Big Sleep", trying to seduce Humphrey Bogart. Drug addict, nymphomaniac and criminal.

Your answer is right there in the Directory. At 306 Main is Murray's Custom clothes and next door at 308 Main is The Milan Hotel

Thanks so-cal-bear. To be honest I don't mind this mid-century building at all; in fact I kind of like it. (despite the podium)

Could the text on the verso be talking about the infamous Los Angeles Chevy dealer Bill Heard or his father? He was the largest car dealer west of Denver.

It says "Al Herd" and I just found this obit in the LA Times for 1997:

Quote:

Alva Herd; Automobile Dealer and Real Estate Broker
May 01, 1997

Alva (Al) Herd, 91, a major Southern California automobile dealer and real estate broker. Born in Glenwood Springs, Colo., Herd moved alone to Oakland when he was 13. He gravitated to Los Angeles in 1921 and a decade later opened a car dealership at Sunset Boulevard and La Brea Avenue. He conducted automobile auctions in four states and was one of California's largest dealers in the 1930s and 1940s. Herd switched to real estate in 1947, brokering land purchases for what is now the City of Industry, Rancho Mirage, the Del Amo Shopping Center and the Howard Hughes RKO Ranch. Herd handled sales of estates to celebrities in Beverly Hills, Brentwood, along the Sunset Strip and in the Hollywood Hills. He earned national publicity as one of the first to use creative financing packages when inflation pushed up housing prices in the 1970s. On Sunday in Los Angeles.
Not sure if there is any relation to Bill Heard.

Thanks mdiederi for the information...most interesting.

Evidently Al Herd had his day in the sun. His sales gimmicks apparently included a dazzling white 1953 Cadillac Eldorado!.

I've been meaning to say this for months now, but better late than never.

This thread is absolutely amazing, and I have spent many, many hours enjoying it.

Thanks so much to all that contribute.

Welcome, AtlantaGuy! Personally, I'm not able to contribute much, since my hometown is Albany, NY. But, like you, I have come to appreciate all the hours and detective work that others have put into this site. The history of Los Angeles is simply amazing, and since it is such a new city, that history is often in pictures so we can see where she once was, and where she is now. I hope you visit this site every day, as I do. There seems to be no end to the surprises, mysteries, and drama of this great city.
BTW, I like your avatar, we may be "brothers."

^Thanks so much, Albany NY!

Sadly, I don't visit this thread every day, but I should. I find it absolutely fascinating, and I have a very deep love affair with Los Angeles. I don't get there as often as I would like to, but am fortunate to visit several times a year as my favorite couple in the world live there and I work virtually for a SoCal firm.

And we probably are brothers if you like and "get" my avatar!

A closer look at Playa Del Rey?

(Note: some of the "undated" photographs seem to have duplicates that bear dates mostly between 1907 - 1924. A certain amount of confusion/overlap with Surfridge is, one supposes, understandable. The same might be said for nearby Manhattan Beach - http://www.kcet.org/updaily/socal_fo...entennial.html.)

Can anyone tell me what we're looking at here? At first I thought it was the same building in BRR's post.

I found this pic. in an old file, and my description is "maehome 64 st. & ocean front walk playa del rey."

For the life of me, I can't remember why I put "maehome". Did mae west own beach front property? mae murray?

I LOVE Judy Holliday.

I never knew Josephine Hull won an Academy Award.

Not a big fan of Jose Ferrer.

George Saunders ended up killing himself (and his wife, if I remember correctly) -noir

Many communities have their own "Dogtown." E.g., St. Louis. Santa Monica, especially near Ocean Park, is occasionally given the moniker, "Dogtown." Yes, skateboarders hail from the area (bottom), but is there a definitive reason for/origin of the nickname as used in SM?
