Sorry for the lame question, but does anyone know when actual construction will begin?

^ I don't think there is even a consensus on the location of the terminal: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...BAMJ19QIMR.DTL

^The location of the Transbay Terminal is set in stone. It's whether the high-speed rail terminal will be located there or in another location that is being questioned, although I think there's little doubt it will be anywhere but the Transbay.

Anyway, I don't think there's a specific date for construction of the new Transbay Terminal to begin, but supposedly sometime in 2010. I'd imagine late in the year...they still have to tear down the old one after completing the temporary one and getting things moved over there.

Among the reasons WildCowboy is correct about the HSR is that bringing CalTrain to the TransBay is not under the purview of the HSR authorities and the city is determined it will come into the new terminal. Once the tracks and tunneling is done, it would be silly not to bring at least some HSR service (one proposal has some HSR trains coming into the TransBay, some terminating at 4th & Townsend) into the new terminal.

As for the terminal itself, not only is the location and design pretty firm now but the money to build the terminal building (so-called "Phase I") is in hand. So it seems as certain as anything can be that it will be built. When/if the tower and the CalTrain tunnel from 4th & King (so-called "Phase II") follow is less certain.

From the latest published schedule, the last transit operators are going to move over to the temporary terminal by mid-2010 (some will move sooner). We should start seeing demo of the old terminal shortly after that. I don't know how long demolition will take, but I'm expecting it to be started by next summer.

I'm pretty sure now that this rig is taking deeper core samples:

Lots of other digging going on too:

It is, but this being San Francisco, it's more likely to be 1000 than 1200 as the Planning Dept. and TJPA originally proposed.

Also, Hines has paid for the RIGHT to build the tower (said money being used to build the terminal). As far as I know, they have no obligation to build it until they deem it an economically viable project. That may not be for some years now. And, in the meantime, I don't know of any reason they couldn't sell their entitlements. I think if they did, the buyer would have to use the same design, though.

Had a whole post get lost because SSP crapped out. I'm not writing that all up again, so here's the Cliff's Notes:

Basically, everything about the terminal seems on track. Should see the temp terminal in operation next spring, then they'll demo the old terminal. I don't think anyone knows when the tower will get built.

I'm an outsider looking in and tried to find the posts that told which design was chosen, but it's almost like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Can someone just message me? Thanks.

Cesar Pelli.

To the disappointment of most of us.

Looking back I think the SOM proposal may have been better. However, I think the Pelli design had a better station.

Too bad I can't change my vote, though.
