The No Knives Dive Bar Series

Someone thought there was a dive bar thread and I looked and nope. But now there is. We rate our dive bars here.

What sort of rating system are we using ?

For my favorite 118th hangout, Green Frogs, I'd go with the classic knife ratings. I give this bar a five knives out of a possible 10. The lower rating is due to the influx of hipster types who think the place is cool now.

For the Hilltop, I'd go with the empty cocaine bag in the bathroom rating. This place gets a high bag of coke rating, that seems to be the fuel behind the drunken revelery. I'd say seven empty coke bags out of 10

For the High Run, I'd rate it in truck balls. This bar gets six sets of truck balls out of 10

Does anyone else from the over 40 crowd remember Ernie's Snake Pit in the basement underneath the food court at Bonnie Doon Mall? Classic.

It was fairly tame last time I was there.

Hub on Jasper was a good time. some sketchy characters in that place. 6 drunken sailors out of ten

Mono Lisa's (or something like that on 97 and 118) is a gem. 5 busted up street hookers out of ten

Cold...whats the old beer hall we went to on 118 by the old hotel near fort road? 7 conversations with with an old washed up drunk out of ten

Transit is still on my to do list.

Only place we ever chickened out was the Royal Hotel.....walked up to it for a drink first thing in the morning and there was already a large group waiting for the doors to open....probably would have gone in if there was more than just the two of us.

The guy who used to live across the hall in our condo in McKay used to drink there. He'd bring home drunken hookers at 3am and they'd get into fights in the hallway. Our building had to be fumigated for bedbugs three times because of whatever he was bringing home from that place

You should see that place on karaoke night. Whoa

'Cold...whats the old beer hall we went to on 118 by the old hotel near fort road? 7 conversations with with an old washed up drunk out of ten''

hmmm cannot recall.

DD's on stoney - 3 rig pigs out of ten

Big Foot on 118ave/124st - quite fun, family run, pool, darts, karaoke - 8 smokes out of 10.

Green Frog - i dig it

Gallagher's on whyte - something off with this place, people walk into the kitchen, cute girls too, 7 random ladies out of 10.

Drake Hotel in Beverly - fun place, locals bar, i want to go back on a friday with live music.

SHO - what's the place we went to on stoney/149st NWC? sucked
-ski lodge on 118ave and about 66st?
-what were some of the other dozen or so we went to?

Dockside is always interesting

I've been to DD's with a friend who lives in JP. I found that place really sketchy. Major biker hangout, they all know each other. Outsiders tend to feel uncomfortable I think. I give that bar three greasy biker ponytails out of 10

Dusters on 118th is a fun time... fantastic food, local bar that has a little of that 118th ave flavour but the owner doesn't put up with no BS so the place is generally on the up & up.

I regret never having gone into the Richelieu. Any bar that is lit by bare 60 watt bulbs in service sockets has got to be something special

For you dive bar fans who may happen to vacation in & around the North Okanagan next summer, skip the Kelly O'Brians and Alexanders Beach pub.. You must go to either the Coldstream Hotel Pub or Toro's. Both will offer you a unique perspective of small town dive bar flavour. For even smaller town charm, head 20 minutes east to Lumby and hit up Lumberjacks

Do any of our Calgary lurkers know if Van's Trophy Lounge on 17th is still around ? Probably my most favorite dive bar ever.

Blue Quill Pub was pretty gritty considering the neighborhood.

Don't get mad at me, I don't actually believe the clip, it's just always what I think about when people have this discussion lol.

Edit: I guess I should contribute something constructive... This "green frogs" someone mentioned is for sale on Cushman Wakefield. 159,000
