The more I think about it, the more I think I like McIver as premier. We need someone to get that mess in order up there, but someone who also understands that the cities need a sustainable funding model, and I think he gets that.

I think what the PCs need to continue to win is pretty simple, a "I'm going to clean house/be transparent" (with specific plans on how that will happen) candidate vs the "steady as she goes" Dave Hancock candidate. I really think that sort of comment from Hancock was a terrible move, although I understand that he probably didn't have a mandate to do much as far as a shakeup. I feel like a decent chunk of people who are disappointed with the PCs are still wary of the WRP, so the PCs really need a reboot-the-party candidate for premier.

Well Jim Prentice is the new Premier

It seems that Iveson and Nenshi's attempts to sewer him failed, and so we get more of the same

This is the beginning of the end, I think

We need another premier like Ralph who loved the province above anything else.

We need another Peter Lougheed. Prentice’s priority #1 has to be transparency and weeding out the old, entitled, backroom boys and girls, which could be codenamed “renewal”.

Ralph loved everything in Alberta except Edmonton, I hope we NEVER get a guy like him in office again.

I don't think there were any attempts.

The political landscape in Alberta is generally pretty pathetic, and it isn't a unique problem to us. It's a problem all over Canada. General voter apathy and a lack of candidates that anyone could possibly get excited about. We need much more competition in the people who are vying to be premier.

Here's a good snapshot of the latest election:

http://globalnews.ca/news/1548584/ji...-next-premier/

Prentice won a "landslide" whereby only 23,000 votes were cast. That's less than half the votes in any of the four previous elections going back to 1992.

People just don't care any more and no one has given anyone any reason to care. Things need to change.

I think we have it reasonably good, actually, but by that I mean relatively good. Iow we have some quiet good politicians, unlike other areas that seem to have none. Off the top of your head see if you can name a good politician in Ontario, for example, at any level. It would be great to have more, however. I wonder if Mandel, or Nenshi or Iverson will enter the provincial ring at some future point. Prentice seems descent. He has a lot of work to do to rebuild trust, but I think he can do it.

Here's hoping Prentice can do some damage control and keep the Wild Rose from winning the next election...

The Wildrose are in no position to be kept from winning - they still need to break through their ceiling to have any chance. If they haven't in the last 10 months, I can't imagine what will cause that to happen.

Does anyone know when the next Alberta Provincial election is slated to occur?

Also how come the provincial liberals seem to fail at getting anyone elected?

This is a legitimate question.

Spring 2016.

A fundamental misunderstanding of why they are elected as members, and misinterpretations of their limited successes (which they are not the only ones to fall guilty too, all of our political parties have limited electoral landscape knowledge).

The problem posed by the Wildrose Party is that they have positioned themselves to be the protest party. Many people who are sick of the PCs and don’t trust them anymore will vote WR by default. We saw this last election after the “do nothing committee” thing broke. The WR jumped up in the polls in spite of the fact that nobody knew who they were. It was only after a couple of their members opened their mouths and started showing people who they were that the voters started to say, “Wait a minute. I’m tired of the PCs but this isn’t what I want instead.” Then the PCs rebounded and won the election. If the WRs have reigned in their lunatic fringe we might not get that kind of reminder this election campaign.

What the Wildrose Party needs to do is not demonstrate that they aren't just a protest party, but that they aren't merely the ugly carcass of the Social Credit party being hobbled together. That means purging the Byfield family and the like from dictating the party's social policy.

I think the Wildrose stand a serious chance of winning. All the entitlement the PCs have shown lately has a lot of people really pissed and fat chance they will vote for the Liberals or socialists (NDP) lol. Like Allan said, if they can keep their members in check without blurting out religious BS they should do very well once the election campaigning starts up as the PCs have given them a ton of ammo.

Just as a disclaimer I don't think socialism is a bad thing, that comment was just what the knuckle draggers in this province will be screaming if the NDP starts to get any sort of momentum.
