Update from Phoenix Spokes People:

Roosevelt Bike Lanes Update!

Here is the criteria the city plans to use in order to determine if the temporary bike lanes on Roosevelt will become permanent.

During the 30-day temporary trial of Option A, cameras and detection equipment will be placed to capture the following:

Driver behavior
Vehicle delays / backups
Bicycle counts
Vehicle speed
Traffic volumes

Staff will evaluate this information along with the feedback received at bike@phoenix.gov before deciding on and implementing the permanent striping configuration.

We need to make that bicycle count super high during the trial. Be on the lookout for an announcement of the trial start date.

In the meantime, as well as during the trial, please email Mayor Gallego, Councilperson Nowakowski and City of Phoenix Streets Department to let them know your preferences.

Contact Info:
Mayor Gallego: mayor.gallego@phoenix.gov
Councilperson Nowakowski: council.district.7@phoenix.gov
City of Phoenix Streets Department: bike@phoenix.gov

When you email Gallego or Nowakowski, please cc bike@phoenix.gov, so that they are aware of your preferences.

Yes We Can! Si Se Puede!

Heard from a source in ADOT that the South Mountain Freeway will open on Monday, December 23rd. There is a public event/community fair on to-be-opened freeway on Sat. 12/21, which bodes well for what I heard about the freeway opening soon after.

And it's pretty darn nice! Checked it out last weekend. Was surprised how much is already open!

I noticed yesterday while driving down Central there are a few spots that appear to have some minor work going on and also a vacant lot with construction equipment and fence sign reading, "South Central Light Rail Project".

Let the construction begin.

Yes, I think I read that they're doing "utility exploration" in some spots. If there areas where utility locations are not believed to be reliably mapped, they have to do some digging to find where pipes and cables are. Once that reconnaissance is out of the way, then utility relocation can begin in places where necessary.

I've gotta be honest. I expected more voices and lawsuits after the failed vote to stop the extension. It's been pretty darn quiet.

I think the anti-rail movement splintered after the loss of Proposition 105 with different factions blaming one another and previously hidden coordination with Koch-backed groups exposed via leaked emails.

Was checking out some of the Google street views on Central and found one that is still showing the track getting built down Central Ave in front of the Viad Tower. You can pretty much get right on the track with the street view. Thought I would share:

You can also use the maricopa county historical gis to see what things used to look like, albeit not in street view.

I thought it was Saturday, 12/21, after the community event to celebrate it.

Could be more sections opening? The Ahwatukee side is open for a good 8 miles or so.
