Honestly, I'm warming up to this a little. If nothing else, it will be funny to look at. Kind of like the Hobby building in that regard. It's better than Millennium Rainey, at least. I'd take it over a downtown parking garage that lacked a funny office building top as well!

Gulp, erp, glubble, bleck, gag....those are the sounds of me swallowing the words I'm about to say. Looking at the scale of this building and its location, and I'm not being sarcastic this time........... wait for it...............wait for it.............I think I might actually end up...............its coming............liking this building. Whew, I actually said it. At least it will be different than all the box traps surrounding it, and... the glass top will draw the eyes up. All the renders we have seen is from the sides. It might look impressive looking up from ground level. I believe I am actually starting to appreciate the design. I am going from a previous post where I said God made this his 11th Commandment that basically said this is what thou shalt not do, to eh, what the hell. This could very well end up one of my fav's. Orrrrrr, maybe I need to cut back on my meds a bit...either way, this major opinion swing came totally unexpected.

Dude WE’RE GETTING SO MUCH FREAKING PARKING.

I CANT WAIT to drive down from the suburbs and park there.

Best tooth-shaped parking garage in the whole metro area, aside from the Domain, which has some impressive baby teeth parking going on.

EDIT: corvairkeith, your pics are fantastic per the usual.

They've finally finished the parking garage levels. I guess you could say that construction is currently at the gum-line of the Molar.

I like this building because it's part of what is marking Austin as trending towards adventurous architecture that bigger cities have rather than rectangles. Most buildings in Austin don't have any more complexity than necessary to suit their function or maximize floor space.

I'd agree with you, however the parking podium kinda ruins it for me. The top half is interesting and a bit out of the box but I just can't get over the over-absorbent amount of parking in an area of DT with an over-absorbent amount of parking within a 3 block radius.

In that context it's not forward thinking at all but continues the same old cater to vehicles in a time when we are working on reducing car dependency.

Agreed, although perhaps in the future this garage could supplant nearby standalone garages that could be demolished and replaced with highrises.

You won't be able to see it much from outside-looking-in view -- like from I-35, or Mopac, or from Butler Shores -- but if you're anywhere on Congress from 2nd to 7th, it'll be really prominent.

Parking podium ruins all these buildings tbh, but it appears for the next 10 years or so, it’s what we will have to live with.

That said. This is at least an interesting way to deal with it. It’s a big ironic smack on the kisser, like when your favorite artist sells out. I get it....bills to pay.

can't wait to have the annual austinskyscraperpage meetup in the sky lounge every year for the next 20 years here

and everyone can drive!

jdawg i am 100% with you on increasing walkability and how more parking does not help that. but wouldn't we prefer as many places as possible WITHOUT parking? doesn't concentrating parking in fewer large garages seem preferable to many places with little parking? (we are not ready for garageless building yet, not until we get another 40-50k people living DT)

and in the conversion to a fully walkable DT (which IMO is a matter of when not if) it would seem having a few XL garages will help that process
