COPENHAGEN sep 2016 – warm autumn day with interiors, rare churches etc

It was warm and sunny this late september day in Copenhagen. This was the first time I visited Grundtvig’s kirke in the outskirts. This was also the first time I visited the Town Hall inside, and the Cathedral inside. I also focused a bit more on photographing people, especially around Strøget and Rådhuspladsen, then before.

http://worldtravelimages.net/Copenhagen.htm

Let’s start with the main reason for this trip, Grundtvig’s kirke, a futuristic church in the Bispebjerg district, that I never visited before. Had to take a short bus trip to reach Grundtvig’s kirke:

INSIDE THE CITY HALL (RÅDHUSET):

Rådhuset, Copenhagen's City Hall, is situated right at Rådhuspladsen (City Hall Square). It is 106m tall, just like Christiansborg, and thus share the title as Copenhagen's tallest building. It was constructed between 1893 and 1902. The golden statue of Absalon is above the entrance. There is an 3-storey atrium inside with vaults and Danish flags and glass roofs. In the atrium, exhibitions are held frequently. From the upper floors of the atrium, there are views down on the ground floor. During my visit there was an exhibtition about the calligraphy Master Hsing Yun.
The building, Copenhagen's 3rd city hall, was designed by Martin Nyrop in the National Romantic style, inspired by the Siena City Hall in Italy. Around the corridors and stairways of marble and gold, you find beautiful paintings of Copenhagen, religious paintings, chandeliers and statues of former mayors. There is also a large outdoor courtyard inside the Town Hall building, that features a fountain.
Near the entrance, there is a permanent exhibition about Jens Olsen's world clock and other advanced clocks that are on display.
Despite I have passed by the Town Hall hundreds of times when visiting Copenhagen, I never visited the interior until Septeber 2016. The reason is simply that I didn't think it was possible to go inside! There was no security check, only a few guards, and I was able to walk around the building freely. There is also a tour that takes you up to the tower with views of Copenhagen, for only 30dkr, but that I will spare to next time.

Thanks for this info, Freki! I always visit churches when visiting different cities, mostly for architectural reasons, but also to escape a tranquil moment for some minutes from the buzz of a big city!

Update March 2017:

CONCERT ON AMAGER ISLAND – FIELDS, ØRESTAD, DR BYEN, METRO

Just visited a concert in the failry new (2007) concert hall in the DR Byen media complex, designed by Jean Nouvel. Also visited Field’s, one of Scanidnavia’s largest malls, in Ørestad (southern outskirts). We took the driverless metro to the concert hall. Some of Copenhagen’s tallest highrises are situated in the area, creating a small skyline.
Everything looks futuristic in this part of Copenhagen, situated on the small island of Amager.

Definately! And this futuristic part in the outskirts called Ørestad is even closer to Sweden, it's only about 25 minutes from Malmö.
