Article from NakedPhilly about earth moving on site. I think they're prepping for foundations finally!

Not sure that article really says anything new v. what is already obvious: dirt is being moved around.

No other significant facts.

No point in feeding into the blog echo chamber for no reason.

Without losing my job all I can say is that they are not digging for 1919 yet...

Thats pretty obvious based on the minimal amount of equipment on site. What isnt obvious is what they are actually working on there. Maybe you can give a hint.

I really believe this will be 500 feet+ it just has to be. They wouldn't of stopped if they were just going to build as originally. It makes sense that they are testing the feasibility of a taller structure. I could dream if they made a 800 ft building.

Ugh, I'd forgotten how bad the renderings were for this were. This has got the be the most boring building proposed for Philly at the moment. It'll blend right in with all the bland 70s boxes on JFK.

It would be huge dissapointment to see this lot take so long for a mediocre building.

I know! It's going to be a 3 level parking garage butting right up to the sidewalk with a grass roof isn't it? An Ode to the 1919 most expensive grass lawn of yesteryear. LOL.

Cheers,
G.

More equipment is on site today. I spoke to a worker who said they are indeed doing the initial work for the new building. From what I could see they are exposing the wall next to the entrance to the IBC tower garage and attaching steel beams to brace that wall before the major excavation gets under way. A drilling machine was boring holes at the northern end of the site. And there were 4-5 trucks, a storage trailer, dumptruck and I believe two backhoes on site.

Well, it sounds like they are going to build this 367-foot so-so building after all this time. I am happy that something substantial will go here, but as others have expressed, I am a bit concerned with the fact that with this development, they've eliminated the most logical location for more Class A office space. The main other locations I can think of are the lot on the north side of Market Street between 22nd and 23rd and a few lots roughly in the area bounded by the Parkway, Broad Street, Vine Street, and 16th Street. We need that modest but respectable highrise proposal by LPT to come to fruition catty corner from CITC. Also, the underused lot on the SW corner of 20th and Arch could be suitable for a similar proposal.

I'm not too worried about there not being enough room for class A space since Market East and 30th Street are both still woefully underutilized.

right and we could always use more development east of broad. Plus if the demand is there buildings will be demolished to make way for a larger building. That's what happened when liberty place was built if Im not mistaken. There is a sizable parking lot on north 15th near cherry that would be good site for development. There is also an avis at 20th and arch that could be replaced with a building.

Yep. This is work for the new building.

I stopped by today. There is an excavator on site and a test bore drilling rig. They are also bracing the wall next to the site.

I asked a construction worker and he said it's for a new tower.

I'm glad to finally see this empty lot bite the dust.

The "official" work has not started yet. In order to start work on the new building there are provisions that must be done.

Well of course. This would be considered "site prep."

How tall is the Commie-Block building immediately to this building's north?

Obviously it will have little to no East-West impact on the skyline--perhaps it will squeak through when viewed from the North...

Is Christos going to have to move his cart?

This work has to be done no matter what and it doesn't directly relate to the tower. The tower will start shortly though.

If you are going to respond to every post with “no, it’s not” and no other information there really isn’t much of a point to your posting. The construction worker said it was prep for the new tower which is more convincing to us right now than “no, it’s not”.
