Looks a bit like the Russia Tower.

Can you imagine looking down at SWFC?

I am biased.. since I had a gigantic hand in the form and structure the SOM design took....none of the other designs can touch this beauty IMO:

Yes, same building just a different angle. In that night shot you can really see how each line of structure follows the path of least resistance creating the curves that gradually all converge together into the ground along the three corner mega columns, visually displaying how the building physically handles the lateral forces of the wind... redirecting it all into the foundation at the most efficient points. The idea of it is inspired by Michell's truss theorem (1904), which analyzes stress value ranges in truss members in comparison with the total weight (and therefore cost) of the structure. Structural optimization then becomes just another thing to add to the list of sustainable features this tower has.

The developer bought the rights to develop the land from a previous developer that had SOM produce them a tower (The old version is still floating around the internet somewhere). They decided to hold a large international competition for a new design.

The building is mostly office, with a hotel at the top, so it isn't as if there would be any condos to sell. With this being such a huge well known competition and prime site, I would say the chances of it being built are very high.

The SOM or KPF design. The rest range from crap to great. Foster's design is unremarkable, IMO.

That one and the KPF design are the best in my opinion.

Looking at this...

It looks like the expected height is somewhere between 560-580 metres. So between 70 to 90 metres taller than SWFC.

If that is the site, they've got a head start on construction.

^That isn't the site. The site is at the top left of that photo across from Jin Mao. The competition just happened, so they don't even know what design is going to be built yet, much less how to start creating a foundation.

I love the KPF design--so sleek, and it makes Jin Mao and SWFC look like crappy second-rate skyscrapers in comparison!

The Gensler design is very cool in itself--but I don't think it'd be right for Shanghai, somehow.

The others range from decent to disastrous; I hate the same one everybody else does!
