My problem with it is not that it's unconventional. As you brought up yourself, the Eureka went through reivisons and still ended up stunning, even with its unconventional top/fin/crown. But, the top of this one is just a mess. lol Hopefully, it does go through some refinement.

This tower needs to go back to the drawing board, its not aesthetically pleasing what so ever. Why the mix matched shapes hanging from it and why does it awkwardly break up into 2 different shapes. poor design, the architect needs to go back to aesthetics class.

context renders created by Archi on OzScrapers (he has a great CAD model of the CBD and any new proposal that comes up, usually just adds them to his overall model )

a mockup from Curtain on OzScrapers on the scale of what it would look like if it were built in Chi-town.

Context render, circa 2018 if everything likely to go ahead, does go ahead (if it's not already U/C)

And another bigger context render...

Sorry if 54 Clarke is in the wrong spot not too familiar with it, I think its about right. From this angle the 3 CBD's effect is quite strong. btw if peeps wanna use this pic, go for your life.

Why does nobody like the weird box thing on top? Every city needs something to set it apart...that seems like a feature that everyone will start off hating and in 20 years it'll be adored.

I'm not sure what to think of this one. It is a cool building even with the strange top. It looks like a design from Blade Runner or something. I sort of like it actually. Most of Australia's cities have unconventional towers that really make you stop and stare. Really tall buildings are actually pretty boring. Most of the world's newest supertalls are just tall shafts with little facade detail or any sort of unique shape. For a supertall to really be interesting it mostly has to rely on an interesting silhouette since facade detail would hardly be visible from the ground or far away when it's many hundreds of feet in the air.

This mock-up that someone from SSC did makes it look naked and even more awkward. Those strange overhangs near the top sort of acted like a divider and transition from the tower's shaft to the crown. Now without those overhangs the crown seems tacky and out of place. Without those overhangs, this building would be better off without this crown, too, and instead just continue the tower's shaft all the way up and have it terminate with a flat roof similar to the Willis Tower. I also don't know what's going on with the base/podium. It looks like it's made out of bamboo.

(there's a paywall on the HUN site)

And Curtain on OzScrapers has done another CBD context render with all the bigguns that are proposed:

Not building any supertalls does not mean a city is anti-skyscraper. The Albertan cities, for example, are building vast numbers of skyscrapers and greatly increasing their skylines, but they aren't building supertalls because they are not yet economically viable. They may be viable in a city like Vancouver, but although zoning doesn't allow for it, that doesn't mean it's anti-skyscraper, the region, especially the suburbs, are building just ridiculous numbers of small residential skyscrapers. There are plenty of anti-skyscraper councils, not doubt about it, and fighting for density is an uphill battle. But fo the most part the recession and real estate crash are the main reason for the lack of construction, i'm sure a city like Seattle would love to build more if only the demand existed there. Certainly a city like Detroit would be overjoyed if someone wanted to build a shiny new skyscraper there.
