I've always thought this the most European of major American cities, attested to by my foreign colleagues from my law school days.

I would agree Philly is in the top two or three cities in america that have a European feel. However, I always felt Boston felt slightly more European than Philadelphia. I'm not looking to start a flame war or a city vs. city, I just strictly am curious what your and your colleagues' thoughts are.

No rivalry issues here. I like Boston, and it came to mind as I wrote my post. From a quaint, messed up, non-grid, street layout, I certainly think they have us beat! I think Philadelphia has more grand spaces and vistas (which calls to mind a recent book comparing this city to Paris). There are plenty of societal/cultural (not just built environment) reasons that come to mind as well, which add to the European ambience of Philly. However, I purposefully referred to "major" U.S. cities. Boston is the big fish in its New England puddle, but doesn't even crack the top 20 by population. If I were being more inclusive, I'd have to consider New Orleans and Savannah, among others. Focusing on the top 10 cities, I don't think there's any competition for the "most European" title.

Boston is the 10th largest MSA in the country, I'll remind you. City size by city limits is completely arbitrary (for example, Philadelphia proper is only about 20-25% of its MSA; Phoenix's is more than half) and the Boston conurbation extends far beyond city limits in all directions.

That said, there aren't very many North American cities with a European feel. Philadelphia and Boston are certainly the two largest.

You are right. I actually meant to do an edit and mention that it does crack the top 10 MSA's.

I thought there was going to be a crane picture up here. How many are up now? 17 seems like the magic number. Far exceeds the pre recession building boom era. I doubt there were ever more than 4-5 five tower crane up simultaneously.

It was being assembled on Sunday. Even though I live nowhere near this site I just happened to driving across the South St bridge on Sunday and the erection was happening. They were pretty far along by 10AM Sunday, no boom though.

This is a huge site. Anyone know what the pricetag is on phase 1 of this?

Not sure on the cost.

Phase 1 is a sharp looking tower, at nearly 400 ft at this location - it will really stand out. I feel like its a little overlooked right now for obvious reasons - CITC, FMC, and W Hotel, and Mormon site..; The site is 8.5 acres according to the CDR application.

There are multiple phases to the site, the first phase a parking garage the bridge feed right into via a ramp as well as the aforementioned near 400ft tower. There are two other towers that are pegged to be smaller built further south of the one currently under construction and one small tower on or near the garage. I think this includes a potential hotel in one of the towers, all of it being built as the projected need plays out. I wouldn't be surprised if by the time the first tower is nearing completion that they move forward with phase 2 though.
