No rivalry issues here. I like Boston, and it came to mind as I wrote my post. From a quaint, messed up, non-grid, street layout, I certainly think they have us beat! I think Philadelphia has more grand spaces and vistas (which calls to mind a recent book comparing this city to Paris). There are plenty of societal/cultural (not just built environment) reasons that come to mind as well, which add to the European ambience of Philly. However, I purposefully referred to "major" U.S. cities. Boston is the big fish in its New England puddle, but doesn't even crack the top 20 by population. If I were being more inclusive, I'd have to consider New Orleans and Savannah, among others. Focusing on the top 10 cities, I don't think there's any competition for the "most European" title.
