Here's a 1940 photograph of the Melody Lane before the lettering on the façade advertising "LTHC" and "Fountain Service".

above: If you look closely, "Melody Lane Wilshire" in neon script is above that decorative rectangle with six small squares.

below: I just found this closer view that better shows the neon (I believe it says "of" within the loop of the Y). The outdoor patio looks quite festive!

*hmm..I just noticed something rather obvious. The second tier (enclosed space) in the Kodachrome slide is missing in the black and white photographs.
So the attractive outdoor patio space was sacrificed

I'd like to bring up an interesting old building in Gardena that I don't think has been seen before on NLA. It is on the NW corner of Western Avenue and 166th street.
There is a classic neon sign on the corner that is faded out but you can still see the building was once was the home of the "Sandy Vitale Dance Studio". The address of the dance studio is 1807 w 166th street and the front of the building has the address 16535 S Western Ave. Strangely enough, I believe there is still a dance studio in operation on the upper floor although it remains a bit of a mystery to me who runs it.
I believe I read or heard somewhere that at one time the building served as a courthouse but don't quote me on that.
If any of the super sleuths on here can provide some information on what must surely be an interesting past I would be interested to know.

It is really a shame that it was torn down. It was beautiful!. The 1910 Census shows that a William F. Sherwood owned the house and lived there with his wife Bertha. Mr. Sherwood was listed in censuses as being in Mining and in one directory as a gold miner. One directory shows him at that address in 1909, but earlier in 1901 he was at 515 S. Olive. I can't find who built the house.

That is an a nice old building as well. I remember when it was still a bar about 20 years ago. The Moneta name is prominent around Gardena. It was an area that was included when Gardena incorporated in 1930.
You still see the name associated with various businesses including a great nursery on Vermont ave.

Signs saying "Culver Center" and "Culver Center Fish Market" made this Julius Shulman location much easier to identify! On the left is Market Basket. This is "Job 1538: Bank of America,1953".

Here's a wider view from a little way east.

And a reverse view looking east along Venice Boulevard.

The building is still a branch of Bank of America, although it's acquired an indent halfway up the wall.

I've loved those little 1941 houses for decades, so plain except for the little caps over the doors and some star-spangled shutters. They would be so fun to do up and landscape. There's a total of 18 units.

I'm convinced every other one was once painted pink (close to 40 years ago, but my memory is a bit hazy these days). It made them look like petti fours.

The property last changed hands in 1970.

The throwback plates are a great idea, although when I was a kid I thought this particular vintage was the ugliest thing I'd ever seen.

Funny thing is...I thought it was a state law that all license plates issued by the DMV must be reflective. Obviously they made a special exception for these?
