I'm ntrigued by the large vintage building with the tile roof. Is the photographer on that roof or is he/she on another roof next door

also note: In mid-distance there appears to be an extremely long one or two story building. -this has thrown me for a loop.

_

Location on Google Maps

From back to front:

1. The Hollywood Sign.
2. The Whitley House (building on middle-left that says “hotel” on it) (on Google Maps).
3. 101 Freeway (the grass has been replaced by concrete).
4. Tower of the Wilcox Apartments (on Google Maps).
5. Roof of the Wilcox Apartments (the Spanish roof tiles have been removed).

The RICHFIELD gas station in the photo is now a Chevron gas station (on Google Maps).

The photo was probably taken from the rooftop of the Lido Apartments (on Google Maps).

What's up with the Abraham Lincoln station-wagon? [Lincoln Savings?]

Hi E_R,
Those were earlier renderings. There was some talk of shortening the smaller one and simplifying the exteriors a bit, but we have yet to see new plans or renderings.

Jeez- How I would love to see enlargement of these 5 structures as they stood facing cleared hill at north end of this aerial.. Long sought after for their detail.... Only aerial that included them all--- Sigh....

Me too, rick m, but that's as big as the seller posted them. The full 7.1" x 9" photo is still available here for $22.90 + postage from Reykjavik. The seller posted the preview upside down, so maybe its rarity will go unnoticed.

I might as well use this as an excuse to post another photo from the same seller that I found a couple of days ago. It's 28 years after e_r's picture, but still 30 years ago that Beetlejuice was released.

I wanted to look back at these 5 houses but the photo has disappeared on the posts by Hoss (#47981) and me (#47983).

Don't know what happened there. When I went to Photobucket, I could only view the scaled version and not the full-sized one that I posted.
I've now deleted the original and re-uploaded the image, and it's showing again in both posts. To save you going back, here's a reminder:
(I tried uploading an enlargement, but the full-sized image won't show - it looks like Photobucket is having troubles again!)

Please PM me if any other images go missing.

What 43 mpg car is being advertised for $1,395? I don't believe many Japanese cars were being sold in the US in 1960. Could it be something like an NSU or a BMW Isetta?

RENAULT is at the top of the sign-- apparently the superlemon Dauphine got 43 mpg...

LAT May 20, 1959 & other dates

The John Green Corporation was the LA distributor--notice what is probably that name at the bottom of the sign....

Thanks, GW! Renault is there alright. I looked at that photo many times and failed to see it. It sort of blends into the background. I need new glasses.

Indicated by Scott_Charles in his fine graphic as the present day The Whitley House.

Built in 1925 at 1963 N Cahuenga Blvd and still named the Padre Hotel in the 1960's slide. It was then the El Padre Apartments before the change to The Whitley House.

Here it is in 1928 -

"In mid-distance there appears to be an extremely long one or two story building. -this has thrown me for a loop." e_r

"It is the 101 Freeway." (the grass has been replaced by concrete). scott charles

I stand corrected.

Your annotated graphic was really helpful (and fun) Scott Charles
..and thanks for the vintage pics of the Padre Hotel Noir Noir.

I hadn't noticed that the globes were removed from the two cartouche-like sconces when Sherwin-Williams put up their oversized sign on the end of the building.

DETAIL

The building must have looked beautiful at night. (the globes did light up, right?)

digitallibrary.usc.edu

Now all the globes have been removed. (and they've no doubt been missing for decades)

hmmm...wouldn't the wiring still be in place within the walls?
the current hotel, or the owner of the building, should utilize them.

The sweet Porsche 356 (center left of shot) could probably come close with a light foot....but it would be pretty tempting to punch it.
