Seinfeld seems to show fairly realistic living situations. Those looked like typical apartments occupied by 30-somethings in the Upper Upper West Side during the 80's-90's.

Also Fresh Prince of Bel Air. All fun shows, I watched all 3 growing up. With Fresh Prince, it really painted Philly in a negative light. Rough neighborhood that an innocent kid had to flee, moved out west which was basically paradise on Earth, safe, clean, wealthy lifestyle. etc.

Everything I need to know about Detroit and Philadelphia is on Parking Wars. It is an excellent business card for tourism.

I've been there plenty of times. Plenty of professionals commute from there every day. There are legitimately bad areas to avoid to be sure, like DC was but I enjoy it there. Just don't carry a chip on your shoulder.

The only "great truth" I've learned of those types of media is not about the cities they portrayed but about the mediums themselves.

Most of the time their depictions are cliché horse shit.

You're vastly under estimating how much tv/film is actually shot in Vancouver.... and Toronto for that matter. It might not be easy for you to notice but anyone familiar with both cities can tell right away.

Take that film Juno. Americans wouldn't have noticed but anyone from Canada instantly recognized it as Vancouver, not Minnesota. It was financed in LA but practically everything else was Canadian: the 2 lead actors, the director, film crew, location, etc. There are literally hundreds of examples like that.

LA may have been the primary city used to stand in for other places in the past but that's not the case today. Hollywood has predominantly used Vancouver/Toronto for that for over 20 years now. These days LA stands in for LA.

I don't think that's close to true. LA is still dominant in terms of film/TV locations. When in doubt, it's LA.

Vancouver and Toronto are pretty obviously different from LA (and from one another), and easily distinguishable. They're commonly used, but not in the same galaxy as LA.

Shocking! Tell us more about this astonishing revelation.

an annoyingly high amount of tv is filmed AND set in LA. i miss when more tv was set in the midwest (primarily chicago, but other blue collar mfg cities like milwaukee, detroit, st. louis, etc).

i know there is shameless, and a few others. sometimes shows go a little too far trying to be extra midwestern...shameless sometimes pushes the limit (as they film 3/4th of the thing in LA and get palm trees into shots).

oh yeah, when shows set in NOT LA get palm trees into shots. thinking of the office, it's always sunny in philadelphia, shameless...

This really annoys me. Even worse are mountains or desert. I was watching a movie supposedly set in rural Indiana, and suddenly there are snow-capped mountains in the background. Or I've seen something set in NYC, and suddenly they're in some semi-arid wasteland.

Do they just assume viewers are idiots?

well, most people ARE idiots when it comes to geographic awareness, so it's a fair assumption
