Moncton to host Canada 150 kick-off celebrations on December 31st
November 25, 2016

Moncton, NB – Mark your calendars! A fun-filled day is planned in Moncton on New Year’s Eve to kick-off Canada’s 150th anniversary in 2017!

The Honourable Ginette Petitpas-Taylor, MP for Moncton-Dieppe-Riverview, on behalf of the Honourable Mélanie Joly, minister of the Department of Canadian Heritage, announced the federal government’s funding of $100,000 today for Moncton’s event on December 31st. In fact, Moncton is one of 19 major Canadian cities to have been granted funding to host such a celebration to recognize Canada’s 150th anniversary.

“On December 31, I encourage residents of Moncton to bundle up and come together with their loved ones to witness the greatest Canada-wide celebration in our country’s history. Join the thousands of Canadians from coast to coast who will be kicking off the 150th anniversary of Confederation.”
– The Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Member of Parliament for Moncton–Dieppe–Riverview

“The City of Moncton is proud to partner with the Government of Canada to highlight this important milestone for our country with a memorable New Year’s Eve celebration for everyone to enjoy. As a founding member of Confederation, it is exciting to host wonderful events in New Brunswick to honour our past and celebrate the bright future of our great nation.”
– Her Worship Dawn Arnold, Mayor of Moncton

The ‘Festival of Festivals’ will begin at noon at Riverfront Park, with special family-friendly activities organized by event partners Festival Inspire and the Mosaïq Multicultural Festival. During the afternoon, interactive stations and games will be set-up in order to celebrate local First Nations, as well as our community’s increasingly diverse population.

Then, a special concert will begin at 5pm to celebrate Canadian music, featuring:
• local favourites Izzy and the Prohibition;
• long-time Acadian artist Joseph Edgar, presented by the Festival Acadie Rock; and
• newcomer Francesco Yates headlining the evening.

Once the applause has quieted and Francesco Yates has left the stage, the crowd’s attention will be directed to the riverfront, where the Kick-Off to Canada’s 150th Fireworks will begin.

In addition, community partners Resurgo Place (20 Mountain Rd.) and the Capitol Theatre (811 Main St.) will present special activities during the day.

At Riverfront Park, food vendors will be open starting at noon, and attendees can visit warming stations on-site to beat the winter chill. As well, in the spirit of inclusiveness, the City of Moncton is collaborating with MAGMA (Multicultural Association of the Greater Moncton Area) to offer a ‘Welcome Tent’ with volunteer interpreters, to ensure that our newest neighbours who speak languages other than English or French can obtain information on the event programming.

Detailed information will be released in the weeks leading up to December 31st; residents and visitors are encouraged to visit moncton.ca/Canada150 or ‘Like’ the City of Moncton’s Facebook page for the latest news.

CMHC updated some of their data this past week

Moncton apartment vacancy rate is now at 6% much better than the high of 9.5% in 2013.

This table they made shows nicely the cause of that issue being overbuilding of multiples in the area.

My concern about the above is a couple large projects on the go (Horizon Place, Halls Creek II)...hoping we dont see a sudden boom in the smaller buildings next year or we may bump up again.

They also made a nice table on Migration patterns over the last number of years for Moncton. It shows what we have all been feeling I'm sure about folks leaving for other provinces (Interprovincial) more than in the past, but thankfully international immigration seems to be making up for the gap...very interesting but it seems international immigration looks poised to become the #1 factor behind our growth, nice!

With the Syrian refugees coming in 2016 I can almost guarantee that will be the case for this year!

Here's something I found interesting:

https://earthengine.google.com/timel...,latLng&t=0.00

It's Google Earth's timelapse for Moncton. It loops through satellite shots of the city between 1984 and 2016. You can do it for basically anywhere too.

Very neat indeed. Cool looking at some of the other maritime cities too. Freddy you can see how the North side has been booming, and the construction of the new TCH and stuff too.

As you watch the google earth time lapse it is also interesting to see how the Metro region has grown over the last 32 years.

Moncton area seeks to import 700 skilled American workers
Economic development group 3+ Corporation launches media campaign in the U.S. in bid to fill job vacancies
By David Bartlett, CBC News

The economic development corporation of Dieppe, Moncton and Riverview has launched a campaign to try and bring skilled workers from the United States to New Brunswick.

The 3+ Corporation hopes to attract Americans to fill 700 job vacancies in the Moncton region.

"We want to attract companies to settle here and we need to have enough skilled workers to ensure productivity. It's that simple," president and CEO Eric Mourant told Radio-Canada.

The campaign began on Dec. 1 and will run until March, with advertisements on social and traditional media.

The first ad shows the fictional Uncle Sam with a Canadian flag in the background, with a message that reads: "Greater Moncton, New Brunswick, Wants You!"

It's directed at American citizens, but also expatriates of all nationalities, including Canadians currently working south of the border.

The vacant jobs are in the fields of trucking, information technology, health, business and financial services.

I've heard rumours recently that a shortage of skilled workers was seriously impacting on expansion plans of a number of businesses in the area (like BMM Test Labs). I guess this new campaign by 3+ Corporation confirms this. I wonder how successful they will be?

They've been planning this and talking about it for quite some time now, it's all over the 3+ website in the news sections. I'm sure they'll be very successful.

It's cool to see the progress off the Saint John/Moncton/Fredericton 4 lane.

Feds, Province to contribute $45 to Metro Moncton wastewater plant upgrade.

The federal and provincial contributions of $22.5 M each represent half of the cost of the $90 M project. The remaining $45 will be funded by TransAqua through the Metro Moncton municipal governments.

By federal mandate, work must be completed by 2020.

Phase 2 will be completed by the end of this year. Design of the 3rd phase will begin in early 2017, with construction ongoing until 2020. This phase focuses on bioreactors which will add filters to the water treatment process to make water cleaner.

Disinfection, the final phase of the project, will take place in 2021. This step is not federally mandated but TransAqua believes it is necessary.

Perfect!! Now we get to enjoy the events center when it opens and the waste water treatment plant funds are there too! Funds for the Petitcodiac River Causeway bridge replacement are also in place. This will be a great few years for Metro Moncton infrastructure.

Funds for the bridge have been announced by both branches of the government even though I don't believe that there has been an official announcement. There has been an official announcement about funds for public infrastructure, and during that announcement there were questions asked if some of that money would be going towards the bridge and it was heavily hinted that there would be but no actual "yes" to that answer. However I'm pretty positive that surveying work begun this year to ready the Riverview side for construction. Although I don't want to start a false rumor, this was where I thought we were on the topic of causeway replacement. If you look back at Times & Transcript articles I'm sure it can be found.

Nothing has been announced. Although I share your enthusiasm, and yes it certainly looks like surveying was taking place - until there is an official announcement this all means nothing.

Right. That's what I said, no official announcement, but there's enough money for the bridge if they want to put the money there as said in their campaign promise.
