St. Louis County starts work on new plant science district

Study area for St. Louis County's Plant Science District in suburban Creve Coeur.

Hoping to replicate the success of St. Louis’ Cortex technology district, St. Louis County has begun work to create a similar high-tech district in Creve Coeur.

But instead of focusing on medical and life sciences, the Creve Coeur district will aim at plant sciences, taking advantage of research facilities such as the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center that are already there.

The county announced Thursday that Ayers Saint Gross, a Baltimore-based architectural and planning, has been hired to draft a master plan for the new plant science innovation district.

The district, spanning 575 acres, would be anchored by the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, Bio-Research & Development Growth (BRDG) Park, and the Helix Center Biotech Incubator. It would also include the corporate campus of Monsanto Co.

The St. Louis Economic Development Partnership, a collaborative development effort between the county and city of St. Louis, said Thursday that Ayers Saint Gross had already started mapping ideas for the district, which is designed to attract new companies and create jobs.

The firm has provided planning services for Harvard Medical School in Boston and Washington University in St. Louis, in addition to creating the master plan for the Cortex bioscience and technology research hub in the Central West End.

St. Louis County won a $500,000 grant last year from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration to fund the creation of the master plan.

St. Louis County hires architect for Creve Coeur 'innovation hub'
Jan 29, 2016, 6:56am CST

CityPlace in downtown Creve Coeur.

A Baltimore-based architecture firm has been hired to help develop a master plan for a 600-acre "innovation hub" in Creve Coeur.

Ayers Saint Gross will work with representatives from Wexford Science + Technology, the Danforth Plant Science Center, St. Louis County, the city of Creve Coeur and the Helix Center Biotech Incubator to develop a plan for the hub, which will be surrounded by ag-tech institutions such as the Danforth Center, BRDG Park and the Helix Center.

Plans for the hub are expected to be completed by mid 2016, according to the St. Louis Economic Development Partnership.

Ayers Saint Gross has worked on other similar biotech developments, including the Cortex Innovation District in the Central West End and a mixed-use innovation district in Providence, Rhode Island.

“We look forward to continuing to strengthen the St. Louis innovation ecosystem,” Kevin Petersen, Ayers Saint Gross principal, said in a statement.
