Can get cold at times in Austin. Today's high in north central Austin was 24 F after a low of 16 F. We had some scattered light ice, sleet, snow, particularly on the southeast side around the airport. Not much at my house. Averages are fairly mild in winter, but we do get periodic cold waves even here in the south central part of the state. Currently, most of the country is covered by severe cold.
North and northwest Texas can get much colder and more frequently. Last night, parts of the Panhandle were below zero F. They sometimes have blizzards in the Panhandle. The mountains in West Texas can get good snows as well, but not consistently from winter to winter, as would be the case in the New Mexico and Colorado mountains.
