Rumor of second Hyundai plant will be built in Montgomery

Nothing has been confirmed yet.

The reports indicate the South Korean car manufacturer is attempting to fill a need for more crossover vehicles in the North American market by building a new facility that would pump out 300,000 utility vehicles by as early at 2017.

Hyundai has not yet publicly released any plans for a second plant. Montgomery is already home to the first Hyundai plant plant in the U.S. which produces the popular Sonata and Elantra models. The current plant employs more than 3,000 people.

The Alabama Department of Commerce says it has no comment. Montgomery city and county leaders have not addressed the reports. The Montgomery Chamber of Commerce says it is aware of the articles, but adds it has a policy against discussing any economic development project until the time is right.

Masterplan for city's airport will lead to more direct flights and another airline

https://www.montgomerybusinessjourna...cs-mgm-airport

A 20 year plan has been approved by the FAA with a goal of 245,000 passengers a year by 2030 which could increase with a new airline. It's capable to handle 330,000.

These changes can lead to landing a new corporate headquarters.

"In four years, passengers at the Montgomery Regional Airport are likely to see two new air carriers, some new direct flights, more food vendors and a 'better travel experience.'"

"Those passengers probably won’t notice that one of the two runways was doubled in length from 4,000 feet to 8,000 feet or that space was expanded to park planes and that some new corporate hangars were constructed to park some larger aircraft."

"The master plan projects enplanements to reach about 245,000 a year in 2030. There were about 170,000 enplanements last year. The terminal, which underwent a five-year, $37 million renovation, is equipped to handle about 330,000 enplanements a year. That equation could easily change if the last remaining legacy carrier – United – comes to Montgomery."

"One direction that the master plan takes is an emphasis on additional hangars, focused on corporate hangars needed for larger aircraft. The master plan, divided into four phases, calls for 10 corporate hangars at an estimated cost of $7.2 million. It’s about economic development."

"In phase I, which ends this year, two corporate hangars are proposed. There are two more corporate hangars and one 10-unit hangar for smaller planes in phase II (2016-2020); two corporate hangars and two 10-unit hangars in phase III (2021-2030); and four corporate hangars and two 10-unit hangars beyond 2030. Increasing the hangar space will also generate revenue, said Perry, who oversees a $4.1 million operating budget."

"There are two food vendors – Subway and Montgomery Muggs – and Perry hopes to add some more choices. Perry and Gentry have been in discussions with a food vendor who operates a mini-food court – four food vendors in a small area, Perry said. He would also like to have a gift shop."

Perry Hill Crossing

Here are the plans for what's going on at the former Head school site. So incredibly boring. Typical Montgomery shopping center. Originally there was a plan to turn part of it into a city park with commercial but looks like that's a no go.

There's still the armory property next door. I believe the city still owns that and there was some talk about putting in an entrance to the Softball fields behind Goodwyn.
I'm hoping they'll push to widen Perry Hill from Harrison. What they've done hasn't fixed the problem.

New pizza place coming soon

http://www.al.com/business/index.ssf...l#incart_river

Pieology Pizzeria is coming. This is a build your own pizza fast casual place.

The California-based pizza company, founded in 2011, said it will launch two stores in Birmingham, one in Auburn and one in Montgomery by the end of 2015.

"We're beyond thrilled that Pieology was recognized as the leader in the fast casual, custom pizza segment by the industry authorities at Technomic," said Pieology Founder and CEO Carl Chang in a statement. " ... With big plans in store for 2015, we look forward to bringing the signature Pieology experience to pizza-lovers across the country."

Montgomery just got a shot in the arm.

Maxwell is developing a cyber college that could bring more high paying jobs to the area. "...both the private sector and government and Maxwell Air Force Base wants to curb those virtual insecurities by launching a revolutionary Air Force Cyber College in September."

"It could also mean thousands of dollars of revenue for Montgomery, giving it the potential to become a hub for cyber education."

The mayor compares this to another Hyundai plant.

I talked to the owner of that Wings restaurant near the Mellow Mushroom and where the old Buffalo Wild Wings was and he said that he will be opening the same restaurant downtown Montgomery. Didn't say where the location would be, but he said it'll be a hot destination.

The wings were pretty good too. Nice beer.

So Mugshot? That would be a great addition.

D'Road Cafe to open downtown in the former Olive Room location.

"Janett Malpartida wrings her hands as she talks about the nervous excitement of bringing her home kitchen approach to international cuisine to downtown Montgomery."

"The original plan was to close that current location when the new one opens, but Malpartida said she couldn't do that after seeing the reaction of her loyal customers there. So she's planning to keep it open for lunch only starting July 20.

The downtown spot – more than twice the size of her current restaurant – will debut its renovated look Aug. 17 after a private "blessing" for her Bible class and family the previous night. She chose the opening date because it's her mother's birthday."

Don't know if its been mentioned, but it looks like Whole Foods may be coming to Montgomery at I-85 and Taylor Rd along with other retail shops in the center.
Never mind I found this, the bids for the store will be opened soon
Whole Food Market is expected to open a east Montgomery location, according to WSFA. The 40,000 square foot grocery store will be located in the Chase Corner development off Taylor Road currently underway by Aronov Realty Management.

The market is slated to open in early 2016 and should bring about 175 new jobs

Believe this will be the third location in the state

Great for MGM... it should be the fourth. The Bham location already exists, the Mobile one opens next month, and HSV opens when?
