"Demos Shakarian was born in Los Angeles, California, the son of Armenian immigrants who left Turkey just a few years before his birth.
The Shakarian family came under the influence of the Pentecostal movement and relocated to Downey, California and began a dairy business.
By his late teens Demos Shakarian was a co-partner with his older brother as owners of the largest herd of dairy cattle in California."

The dairy was located at the corner of Woodruff and Imperial Highway.

My goodness, I never heard of FGBMFI before:

Downey has its effects.

That Paul R Williams building looks like it may have gained a third floor.

I was just noticing that William Douglas Lee's 1940 Streamline on Wilshire in Santa Monica recently got a third floor (and then some). It's not totally awful:

Is this Demos handing out some free ice cream in the late 1940s? This is a detail from the photo that ER posted in previous reply.

The image isn't showing for me. Are we talking about 507 Wilshire Boulevard, Santa Monica? The 2007 GSV images show that only the façade was saved.

And here's the completed building.

Not too bad an example of façadomy, I suppose (or, as it's also called. façadism). I think we've seen several examples here on NLA over the years. A controversial practice that reduces good architecture to kitsch or Disney fakeness, the remnant saved more to appease the few (like us) who care or even notice. I'd guess though that the tenants in the apartments above this one could care less. I don't know about LA, but this kind of thing is happening behind the brownstone and rowhouse façades of many buildings in NYC--unreinforced masonry structures rebuilt with steel etc-- and there are dozens of examples in New Orleans, where rather than renovate 100-150 y.o. houses it's usually cheaper to keep the fronts and rebuild them completely rearward. I'm in favor it when it preserves scale of the street, despite the often "dead-eye" look of the result.

Speaking of façadomy... it's been a long tradition.......

Back in 2012, GW posted an excellent photograph of 'The Track' Motormat.
http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...postcount=7923

I happened upon a second photograph a week or so ago on ebay. I could be wrong, but I believe this one is a different location. (there were three motormats in the L.A. area, right?)

The 'Track Motormat' sign is partially hidden in front of the third car from the left (see detail below)

detail

Here's a closer look at the posters advertising a rodeo (Gene Autry!) and a football game (Rams vs Redskins) at the L.A. Coliseum.

detail

The Van De Kamp windmill at far right.

Someone is selling gold fish.

detail

A closer look at the food trolley named 'Equipoise' (?)

detail

The one behind it is 'Discovery'.

And believe it or not, this canopied food trolley is called the 'Exterminator'!

Why in the world would they named it that?

I've got another mystery location for today's Julius Shulman post. It's "Job 5333: Heyman House (Beverly Hills, Calif.), 1976". Here's a selection. The clews from this shot are the street number, 1035, and the stop sign at the far left, which indicates it's near the end of a street.

The house is built on a slope, with the ground higher at the rear.

The living area.

One of the smaller rooms.

You can see the roof of this hallway in the first image.

All from Getty Research Institute

There's also a second set of three images from Julius Shulman's visit a year earlier. It's "Job 5212: Heyman House (Beverly Hills, Calif.), 1975". The two exterior shots show the newly finished building surrounded by scrappy grass. The third image (below) shows the living space without furniture.

Getty Research Institute

I've spent quite a while hovering around Beverly Hills on Google Maps, but failed to spot the house. Does anyone recognize it and know if it's still standing?

The boxes were all named after racehorses...it's The Track, right?

This was The Track at the nec of Beverly and Kilkea... Von's Beverly Market was across the street and down the block at the swc of Crescent Heights...

1960 - Dorothy Kilgallen covers the Finch-Tregoff murder trial at LA Superior Court, 111 N Hill St. The access to the courtroom and jury is somewhat surprising. Times have changed.

Subject is not new to NLA: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/newr...eply&p=5752239

More Background: http://murderpedia.org/female.T/t/tregoff-carole.htm

Synopsis from LAPL:
Quote:
Wealthy Dr. Bernard Finch and his mistress, Carole Tregoff were on trial for the murder of Finch's wife, Barbara Finch. Initially Finch and Tregoff hired John Patrick Cody, an ex-convict, to do away with Finch's wife so that Dr. Finch could avoid the risk of loosing his fortune in a divorce with Barbara. Cody failed to complete the deal and disappeared with money in hand. Finch and Tregoff then took it upon themselves to do away with Barbara Finch. On July 18, 1959 in a struggle between Barbara and Bernard at Finch's home in West Covina, Barbara was shot and killed. Finch and Tregoff ended up facing three trials; the first two ended in mistrials and the third they were found guilty and received life sentences.

Kilgallen was one sharp individual. The only time I saw her flummoxed was on "What's My Line." Andy Griffith was the mystery guest (the panel was blindfolded, if you've never seen the show) and was then the toast of NYC for playing the hick in "No Time For Sergeants" on B'way.

Anyhow, Griffith answered all the questions in a perfect Oxbridge accent. The panel went down in straight sets, a rarity for that bunch.

And if you haven't seen Griffith in "A Face in the Crowd," do so immediately :-)

Cheers,

Earl

I think this might be the What's My Line episode you're talking about. Skip to 16:00 to see Andy sign in. They guessed him very quickly in 1958 and 1959!

To avoid disappointment for the post being too brief, here are a couple of unrelated images of North Hollywood residences and the front lawn of a certain campus of higher learning. No idea whether Driver's ed was offered when the images were taken. There are no accompanying identifications or descriptions other than "Homes in North Hollywood." No dates either.
