They've posted this on the construction fence at 10th ave between 28th and 29th. Looks like this is what we can expect wedged between Avalon West and the High Line.

^ well, at least that seems like it will be moderately better than avalon, so it will cover up that eyesore from view a bit.

New Design Concept for the High Line at the Rail Yards

November 11, 2013
Erika Harvey

Quote:
Tonight we unveiled the latest design concept for the Spur, a unique area within the third section of the High Line at the Rail Yards, at a public presentation at the School of Visual Arts Theatre.

Neighbors, supporters, members, and friends gathered for a presentation of renderings of the Spur by the High Line Design Team’s James Corner of James Corner Field Operations and Ric Scofidio of Diller Scofidio + Renfro, as well as an update on the progress on construction and the project timeline by Friends of the High Line Co-Founder Robert Hammond.

The Spur is the gateway to the High Line at the Rail Yards. It extends across the intersection of 10th Avenue and West 30th Street. Decades ago, this extension, called the 10th Avenue Spur, connected with the Morgan Processing and Distribution Center, allowing freight trains to carry mail and packages to and from the upper-floor loading docks of the post office building. Today, the Spur is the widest area on the High Line and occupies a strategic position in the neighborhood, where it will serve as a visual access point to Hudson Yards, and offer visitors a new and unique park experience.

The new design for the Spur will offer the public an immersive experience of nature in the heart of New York City. Visitors will enter a circular structure lined with dense woodland plantings that creates an intimate setting. The structure will also provide much-needed work space and amenities, such as public restrooms.

Friends of the High Line and the City of New York are working to open the High Line at the Rail Yards as quickly as possible, with a goal of a full public opening in late 2014. The Spur is expected open to the public 1 – 2 years after the opening of the rest of the rail yards section of the High Line.

I am loving what they are doing with the old high line. All this pre-cast concrete and gardens are making this area very pedestrian friendly, in an already pedestrian friendly neighbourhood. I have also noticed other cities have adopted this idea of changing overhead rail lines into parks.

New York YIMBY:

Excavation Begins: 860 Washington Street
BY: NIKOLAI FEDAK ON DECEMBER 12TH 2013 AT 11:00 AM

Quote:
Machinery is on-site and digging has begun at 860 Washington Street, which is the latest project to begin construction adjacent to The High Line. The 10-story and 175 foot tall building is being developed by Romanoff Equities, and the architect is James Carpenter.

860 Washington Street will be primarily office, with retail occupying the first two floors, keeping in character with its pedestrian-oriented surroundings. The project’s approval process took several years; ultimately, the height was shortened to the current version, which will contain 116,000 square feet of space.
.......

Completion is expected in the summer of 2015.

New York YIMBY:

Construction Update: 508 West 24th Street
BY: NIKOLAI FEDAK ON DECEMBER 16TH 2013 AT 10:00 AM

Quote:
The Cary Tamarkin-designed 508 West 24th Street is nearing completion, and has now topped-out. The 11-story structure has a total of fifteen units, and it will be a major upscale addition to The High Line corridor.
......

Aesthetics are partially responsible for the building’s pricing, with Curbed reporting that ‘Penthouse A,’ measuring 3,300 square feet, is on sale for $12.5 million. Though the unit does have 1,900 square feet of outdoor space, nearing the $4,000 per square foot mark is a testament to The High Line’s luxury cache.
......

Completion of 508 West 24th Street is expected in 2014.

New York YIMBY:

Remediation Begins: 501 West 17th Street
BY: NIKOLAI FEDAK ON DECEMBER 16TH 2013 AT 6:00 AM

Quote:
While much of the activity along The High Line has been concentrated along adjacent lots in the West 20s, work appears to be imminent at a long-vacant site between 17th and 18th Streets. Owned by Edison Properties, the property has seen several visions — and Curbed has renderings of an unbuilt two-towered configuration — though current plans have not been disclosed.

The Real Deal notes that 501 West 17th Street used to be home to a gas-processing plant, which explains why work on the project is beginning without any approved permits for future buildings. As a ‘brown’ site, the soil conditions must be remediated before new development can start, and it appears that the process is underway, with the former parking lot now reduced to dirt.

In the meantime, the lot will remain home to a billboard, which has hosted both advertisements and art pieces. Though permits are lacking for an actual building, new ones have been filed for illuminated signage, so it appears that the commercial art installation may be getting an upgrade before it is cleared to make way for eventual development.

Despite the lack of public plans, Edison’s HLP properties — which will be the division developing 501 West 17th Street — has noted that the project will be mixed-use. Completion is likely by the early 2020s.
