Thats a nice shot. Showing a 100 plus years of architecture history intermingling with the new. Flat Iron was at one point was the tallest in the world.

Some of those shots really show off the superior quality of this facade system.

*sarcasm

^^^^^

It does integrate well. To elude to it being bad is not right. I could point to a couple of crappy NYC projects, but this is not one of them. Its elegant in its nature. A modern twist on art-deco, and another great work from A.M. Stern.

Are you kidding? You can see all the joints between the facade panels. They don't align perfectly and aren't installed perfectly flush with each other. Given that they're trying to create the illusion of a traditional stone facade, it fails spectacularly when you can make out the prefab panels. You'd think that, for all that money, they could get that detail right.

^^^ This.

I actually think the massing of the tower is quite elegant, recalling many of New York's classic buildings. But the facade almost looks wavy around the joints, the way they push in and out instead of aligning perfectly. You can really see this in the last 3 photos.

You can see the same prefabricated sloppiness on Stern's Courthouse in Richmond, VA:

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fi...Courthouse.jpg

I walk by this building regularly and, while there are some nice aspects to it, shortly after it was finished I immediately became distracted by the same problems that have been pointed out with the current tower. In person, it just looks messy, as if something is slightly wrong. The whole effect is cheap, especially compared to surrounding pre-war buildings that are more carefully crafted.

It just goes to show that honesty in regards to materials matter. Maybe we should stick with glass curtain walls if we're not prepared to invest the same quality as previous generations did.

Still love the design and massing. It looks great. If you don't look that close. If this was a limestone Zeckendorf building with the same massing and design, it would be magnificent.
