Stan Kroenke got inspiration for Rams’ stadium from Vikings’ venue

Los Angeles Rams owner Stan Kroenke expects his team’s new stadium to be the best in the world. In the meantime, he sure likes U.S. Bank Stadium.

Kroenke visited the Vikings’ new venue for a Sept. 1 preseason game. He spent plenty of time walking around before the game looking for ideas that possibly could be used for the temporarily named City of Champions Stadium, which will open in Inglewood, Calif., in 2019, and is projected to cost $2.66 billion.

U.S. Bank Stadium, which cost $1.1 billion, was designed by HKS Architects in Dallas, the same firm doing the Rams’ stadium. In an interview with the Pioneer Press, Kroenke said the use of ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (EFTE), a fluorine-based clear plastic that covers half the U.S. Bank roof, played a role in architects using the same material for the roof of the Los Angeles-area stadium.

“It’s really beautiful,’’ Kroenke said of U.S. Bank. “We looked at a lot of things in detail. … I like the ability when the light comes in. That’s called ETFE …. We have a lot of that. We’re using it in L.A. in a different way.

Excavation for the Rams' stadium could begin in just weeks

The start of excavation for the Rams’ $2.6-billion stadium in Inglewood may be weeks away.

“We’re moving to try and get into construction sometime in the next month,” Gerard McCallum II, project manager for the Hollywood Park Land Co., said Wednesday.

In another sign of progress on the project at the 298-acre site, the Federal Aviation Administration this week approved the first of several pieces of heavy equipment to be used during construction.

The FAA determined that a 110-foot-tall LB 44 rotary drill rig won’t pose a hazard to air navigation. Six other applications are pending with the FAA for large cranes to be used for the stadium project.

Infrastructure work at the site has been going on for the last year and a half. The excavation will be the most dramatic sign of progress on the stadium that’s expected to be sunk at least 100 feet into the ground.

Renovated Coliseum Press Box to be Named Otis Booth Press Box

The press box at the to-be-renovated Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum will be named the Otis Booth Press Box in recognition of a $7.5 million gift from the Otis Booth Foundation.

Last year, USC announced plans to renovate and restore the Coliseum. The estimated $270 million renovation, privately funded by USC, will begin after the 2017 Trojan football season and will be completed for the 2019 home opener.

Among the planned renovations is the building of a new structure on the south side of the stadium that will house suites, loge boxes and club seats, topped by a new press box. Other renovations include replacing every seat in the stadium, adding aisles and increasing leg room, installing new video screens and lighting, adding new concession stands and upgrading concourses, as well as restoring the iconic peristyle

Rams to break ground on $2.6 billion Inglewood stadium Thursday

The Los Angeles Rams will break ground on their $2.6 billion stadium in Inglewood, California, during a ceremony at 11 a.m. PT Thursday.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, Rams owner Stan Kroenke and Inglewood mayor James Butts will all be in attendance.

The 70,000-seat stadium and an adjacent, 6,000-seat performance venue will be the centerpiece of a 298-acre, mixed-use development on the site of the old Hollywood Park racetrack, set to be completed for the 2019 season. The Rams are playing at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in the meantime.

The ceremony will mark the start of digging for a 100-foot-deep hole where the stadium will reside. Ultimately the venue will also include a hotel, office space, retail and housing. It is scheduled to host the Super Bowl in 2021 and is in the running to host the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Los Angeles Rams break ground on $2.6-billion Inglewood stadium, 'new era' of NFL

With more than 100 invited guests in attendance — politicians, media, members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and even NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell — Kroenke and others plunged shiny silver shovels into a pile of dirt and extolled the virtues of a privately financed stadium that’s expected to cost more than any other.

“This thing is going to be unbelievable,” Kroenke said. “I don’t think people really understand the scale of this.”

“For the first time, we have a true indoor/outdoor venue. … It’s totally unique in the world,” said Mark Williams, who heads the sports and entertainment division at stadium architect HKS.

Finally it all starts falling in place.

Allyson Felix begs IOC not to let Trump win derail Los Angeles Olympic bid

Felix, the key speaker for the Los Angeles bid as it made its first public presentation to officials in Doha, came with a simple message for the 98 International Olympic Committee members who will choose between LA, Paris and Budapest next September: “Please don’t doubt us – we need the games to help make our nation better, now more than ever.”

“We’re also a nation with individuals like me, descendants of people who came to America, not of their own free will but against it. But we’re not a nation that clings to our past, no matter how glorious – or how painful. Americans rush toward the future.

“I believe LA is a perfect choice for the 2024 Games, because the face of our city reflects the face of the Olympic movement itself.”

This is our third attempt to host the Olympic Games in the past 10 years and for many reasons ... I must say this is the most remarkable US bid I have ever seen,” the US Olympic Committee’s president, Larry Probst, said. “We have learned many lessons from our previous bids, and failure can be a great teacher.”

Los Angeles Would Host the Greenest Games in Olympic History

Los Angeles is committed to delivering the "Greenest Games" in Olympics history, LA 2024 Chairman Casey Wasserman said Monday while pointing to Mayor Eric Garcetti's recent "visionary" speech at the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Conference as evidence.

Garcetti delivered the keynote address to a network of the world's largest cities at the C40 conference in Mexico City on Thursday, where he announced new plans for L.A. to curb greenhouse gas emissions, fight climate change, and increase electric vehicle use.

"The LA 2024 team are so proud of our mayor in taking this global leadership position on tackling climate change," Wasserman said. "The Olympic family can be totally confident that Los Angeles 2024 would be a Games-changer when it comes to environmental sustainability.

Olympic bid process needs to change: IOC president Thomas Bach

Signaling a potential radical change in the way Olympic host cities are chosen, IOC President Thomas Bach wants to revise the bidding process because it “produces too many losers.”

He wouldn’t rule out the possibility of awarding two games at the same time.

FAA approves first cranes for new Rams stadium

The Federal Aviation Administration on Friday greenlighted the first of several large cranes to be used to help construct the $2.6-billion stadium for the Rams in Inglewood.

The two Liebherr LR 1300 cranes will stand 195 feet and 228 feet above the 298-acre site, according to the FAA, which determined that they won’t pose a hazard to air navigation. They’ll be used to install pilings for the stadium’s foundation.

Developers formally broke ground on the stadium last month after about a year and a half of site preparation and infrastructure work. The venue is expected to be completed in 2019.

Gerard McCallum II, project manager for the Hollywood Park Land Co., said the work is on schedule.

Chargers to L.A.? Team will lease Costa Mesa site for offices, training facility if they move

The Chargers have agreed to lease part of a Costa Mesa office campus and are working with city officials to secure permits for practice fields at the location in anticipation of relocating to Los Angeles.

The Chargers have confirmed they will use The Hive and 3.2 nearby acres as their headquarters and training and practices facilities should team owner Dean Spanos decide to relocate the franchise from San Diego to the Los Angeles market and a $2.66 billion stadium being built by Rams owner Stan Kroenke in Inglewood.

Spanos must decide by Jan. 15 whether to remain in San Diego or exercise an option to join the Rams in the Inglewood stadium, which is scheduled to for the 2019 season. If the Chargers opt to remain in San Diego the Raiders would then have the option to relocate to Los Angeles and play in the stadium located on a 298-acre development on the former site of the Hollywood Park racetrack.

New L.A. Rams stadium aims to be an indoor-outdoor entertainment experience

Think of the Los Angeles Rams’ new home in Inglewood as California’s largest indoor-outdoor entertainment space. But instead of a restaurant opening onto a dining patio or a retailer spilling onto a street, this design includes a 70,000-seat stadium, 6,000-seat performance venue and an open plaza embracing the breeze-filled Southern California air, but still fully covered from the elements by a translucent ETFE canopy.

“Natural breezes flow through,” Williams says. “It is very common in Southern California, the indoor-outdoor experience. We have done that same design mentality and scaled it up to three million square feet.”

“It just makes that experience going through the site to the stadium a much higher level,” Williams says. “It is not just a sea of concrete, but is landscaped and terraced.”

“What grew out of that was one of the neatest features of the whole design,” he says. “We have peeled back and terraced around the perimeter, around entry points, so when you are coming in you have a heavily landscaped entry that blends its way into the building.”

And when the entire complex is complete, it will be the largest stadium site in the NFL.

NFL Stadium, Finance Committees to Meet Jan. 11

The NFL’s finance and stadium committees will meet in New York next Wednesday to discuss the potential relocation of the Chargers from San Diego to Los Angeles.

Chargers Chairman Dean Spanos has indicated he will move the team into the $2.6 billion stadium being built by Rams owner Stan Kroenke and scheduled to open for the start of the 2019 season. Spanos has until Jan. 15 to exercise his option to do so, which would give Los Angeles two franchises next season.

It’s believed that Spanos could be seeking more money from the NFL to help him stay in San Diego. It appears that money is needed to bridge the gap between money already available from the league and the team, and public contribution from the city, county and San Diego State.

Spanos met late last month with those entities. However, none of the entities have confirmed a dollar mount they are willing to contribute to a stadium.

“The county participated in one meeting with the Chargers in December where regional options for financing a new stadium were discussed,” Supervisor Ron Roberts said. “At this point, we are waiting to hear back from the NFL and Chargers before talks can continue.

L.A. Olympic bid report forecasts $11-billion boost for local economy

Every city that wants to host the Olympic Games must include, as part of its bid, an economic impact forecast.

These independent reports, commissioned by the bid committee, usually project a positive outcome, and the one released Monday by LA 2024 is no exception.

The study prepared jointly by UC Riverside and a consulting firm projects that hosting the mega-sporting event would boost local economic output by as much as $11.2 billion and create more than 74,000 full-time jobs.

“This report shows that L.A. is an ideal, low-risk host for the 2024 Games, and that we have the right plan in place to make sure that a winning bid brings a lasting Olympic legacy back to our city,” Mayor Eric Garcetti said in a statement.

L.A. hopes to boost Olympic bid by agreeing to host cycling event

The 2017 para-cycling track world championships probably won’t get a lot of attention from sports fans or the mainstream media this spring.

But with Los Angeles volunteering as a last-minute host, the Paralympic competition could end up helping the city’s bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics.

“We are conscious that the award of this event comes late in the season for the athletes, teams and parties implicated in the organization of the event,” said Brian Cookson, the international federation’s president. “We would like to thank the U.S. Olympic Committee for organizing this important event in such a short time.”

The USOC issued a statement saying “L.A. is perfectly suited to host an event of this caliber on a tight time frame.”
