Heard an ad on the radio this morning, seems Desperados is reopening this time where the Stockyards Saloon was on Macleod Trail south of Chinook.

Anyone else go to Avicii last night?

I'd been looking forward to it for months, and the show did not disappoint! Avicii put on an outstanding 2 hour set and the opener (Glenn Morrison) rocked it as well. It's amazing that guys like this can come through and sell out the Big Four(~5000 ppl), but not get any radio airplay in North America.

Some great electro/house acts coming through town these days. Sebastian Ingrosso of Swedish House Mafia is in town on the 13th at Flamescentral, should be another solid show at my favourite venue.

I think Tim Berg might become more popular as people realize he was featured in a mainstream song which is getting alot of airplay now. I have always been amazed at the amount of electro/house shows there is in Calgary in reference to the lower mainland.

Wish that I was in town for this one, would have gone for sure. Lots of great acts have been through in 2011. Lots of dub step. Calgary has always been big on the massive shows.

Went to two clubs i've always wanted to visit but never had the opportunity to...HiFi Club and Commonwealth. Both were pretty nice.

Commonwealth seemed a little too "theme-y" for me but i like it 1000x better than warehouse.

I often wonder if in 100 years, if Calgary ever becomes a massive metropolis, would we have our own version of a "famous" club ie Studio 54.

I also went to Commonwealth and really enjoyed it. My favourite night spot is the Rhino, and Commonwealth is pretty similar in crowd and music so I'm sure that's why.

We already do.....it's Cowboys!

I've heard that they're opening this spring, I'll be excited to see how they how they integrate the club with the casino - I believe it is a first in Canada.

Club + Casino = Instant $$$ for owners. I remember XS in Las Vegas..how right by the pool they have $100 black jack.

I saw a drunk guy drop $10,000 in literally 5 minutes.

One thing I noticed after being in Toronto the past 10 days, is there are so manyhole-in-the-wall bars, there has to be 50+, but seemingly so few in Calgary.

Places like.. this (note: the wide angle lens makes it look twice as big as it is)

http://torontoist.com/2008/03/stuff_white_peo/

or this

http://www.blogto.com/bars/baby-huey-toronto

or this

http://roundletters.wordpress.com/ot...the-only-cafe/

You get the idea. Small, narrow, dominated by a bar, intimate (which can be good or bad depending on the clientele).

I've been trying to think of what might be comparable in Calgary. I came up with Ming:

http://romanticideascalgary.blogspot...n-calgary.html

and Milk Tiger (former Bar Named Sue)

http://www.lostateminor.com/2011/06/...ge-in-calgary/

Anything else?

Maybe Jaro Blue? although it's perhaps more posh than I'm thinking.

Oh, and just to throw in another criteria: must have stools at the bar, ie a single person showing up wouldn have to sit at a table for 4 by themselves.

Went to West this past weekend and was very impressed with the patio setup. I had only been there for drinks after work last summer and didn't know that it turns into an outdoor club at night. It was packed to capacity, with heaters nicely spaced throughout and open until 2 unlike most patios.

An awesome atmosphere with all of the lit up skyscrapers around...dare I say a "world class" nightlife experience.

West is pretty good, although I found last summer that by around 1am swarms of douche flowed in looking for girls who by 1am they wouldn't have to buy drinks for.

Buffalo is like Toronto in that regard. Must be all the architecture from the late 19th and early 20th century with smaller aka narrow but really long (deep) retail spaces. I miss them!

I got hassled quite a bit last year (Asking to see ID multiple times, etc) at West; I think they just wanted us to leave without flat-out telling/asking us. Mind you I was in high school at the time. The venue's great and now that I'm "all grown up" maybe I'll be back again. I was worried it would get douched up and it seems I was correct. Shame.

It is, and really I wish someone would have the balls to build new retail with that sort of format in Calgary. It's the difference between a 1/2 km on 17th ave having 40 retail spaces and a 1/2 km on Spadina in Toronto having 115.

The patio in the evening is awesome! Reminds me a lot of the old Ceilis rooftop patios. But it is certainly a pretentios crowd. You are guaranteed to be drowned is douchebaggery!
