Last week, we had the pleasure of touring (read: getting lost in) the penthouse atop Chicago's Trump Tower. Originally, Donald Trump had planned to keep the 14,260-square-foot unit to himself, but when the market went south he decided to put it on the market, and there it has sat since the tower was completed in 2009. When Tribune architecture critic Blair Kamin toured the unit a couple of years ago, he suggested that an NBA seven-footer with buckets of money snap up the place. Indeed, with 16-foot ceilings, you could easily convert one of the living rooms to half-court and shoot hoops in there. The unit is unfinished, and the only thing in there, aside from windows and drywall, is a workman's sink, which had to be installed in order to get a certificate of occupancy. Without any furniture or even doors, it feels like a maze in the 7BD, 6BA unit. Like the rest of Trump Tower, the penthouse is all about the view,

The views look identical to those seen from that skyscraper in I Robot, it was also pretty much in the exact same spot.

this is one of my favorite, all time skyscrapers. and i would think that few, if any apartments, anywhere, have a view like that.

Typical Trump to build such a large space that goes uninhabited. He did the same thing with TWT which had similar results. Nonetheless, a beautiful space with spectacular views.

I disagree with this sentiment. I actually think it should have been 140' shorter so that it was one foot less than the Empire State Building.

CTBUH made a listing of "vanity height" which is defined as the difference between the architectural detail and the highest floor. You can measure in absolute term (in feet below) or in percent of the building.

The Donald and I haven't discussed the idea. But I understand he knows something about running casinos, and surely he doesn't like all of that empty space he has. The tower may be a bit upscale for some, but that's what a Chicago facility ought to be.

Slot machines are no longer the engine that drives the best casinos. They have become so plentiful around the country, that the ones in Vegas at the Venetian, the Palazzo, the Wynn and the Encore make less per machine than in racetracks in Erie Pennsylvania.

Blackjack tables are also no longer required to be half the tables in the casino.

I think someone could now make a profitable casino just built around baccarat, craps, and a handful of blackjack tables. A luxurious casino floor surrounded by nice places to eat, without having to be an all in one destination. They could still "comp" their high rollers by developing an arrangement with local places.

Singapore has taught us that a casino can be part of a city, without being a world unto itself. Let people play slots in the suburbs, or the city should make two licenses. Have a different place where people can play penny slots and balance beers on their tummies.
