I disagree with this sentiment. I actually think it should have been 140' shorter so that it was one foot less than the Empire State Building.
CTBUH made a listing of "vanity height" which is defined as the difference between the architectural detail and the highest floor. You can measure in absolute term (in feet below) or in percent of the building.
In absolute terms the Bank of America Tower is 3rd in the world behind Burj Khalifi and Nanjing Greenland Financial Center. Trump tower is #16 in the world. but third in the USA.
