Very impressive photos! It's amazing how fast the demolition is moving. That corner building is gonzo!

Rest in peace....

Welcome back T-Mac. Looks like the Metro is the only building standing.

He really is. Thanks for documenting that, T-Mac. Love the B/W pics at the end too.

Hey, does anyone know what upper limit of a building is before they can no longer use wrecking balls/backhoes/construction vehicles that transform into giant robots to tear it down? Like, they have to use explosives? I'm assuming they'll just use the giant robots to take down the only one left standing, but how tall is too tall for them to reach?

I am getting the feeling you are itching to see something go boom.

Does anyone know if it's still the plan to remove the building just south of the Tribune building? I know they proposed placing a mid-block walkway through there.

What's the deal with the very tall chimney thing behind the old Tribune Building that is almost as tall as the building itself? Was that used for coal back in the day? They might want to think about removing it.
Also the indoor staircase behind the Tribune Building, is that new?

I didn't notice that new staircase, but yes it's new, Nuemont must have added that because of the residential component being mostly on that north end.

As for the smoke stack, I'm glad they kept it, I wonder if it's for a boiler heating system exhaust. I think it adds to the character of the building and to downtown. Similar to the Water Tank that LaPorte is supposedly reinstalling on their State St project.

I think implosion is the best option for the remaining building. My guess is they cleared the surrounding structures to make room for the boom..

Well, if there is going to be a boom, then I want to know when and I will make sure I am downtown for a forum meet. I was not in the area when the keybank tower was imploded so I missed that one.

That's what the construction worker on site told me a few weeks back; he worked for a different company, said that Layton was doing the remaining one.

It depends. They don't "claw" a building down above about 65 feet. They can still use a wrecking ball with a tall crane, but it really makes life miserable in the neighborhood, ie. dust, noise, vibration, takes a long time.

There's a break-even point above at about 100 feet. Anything above that, it's cheaper to do a controlled implosion, as long as the contractor is competent.

There are occasional exceptions. The Deutsche Bank Building at 120 West Street in NYC was damaged badly in the 9/11 attacks. They didn't do an implosion because of the fear of traumatizing the neighborhood, bringing up bad memories. It was pricey to take down a 500+ foot building a piece at a time, and dangerous too. They had a crane drop a 22-foot pipe and injure two workers, during "deconstruction", as well as a fire. It took nearly 18 months and was very expensive, compared to an implosion.

Just had a crazy thought. Maybe we could add the Boyer 145/151 project to this thread as well, at least perhaps until permits are issued to build one or the other, or both. Then we could throw all the photos for the two different buildings in here. IDK, what do you guys think? I still consider myself a newbie since I don't post all that often.

I would say keep stuff about 145/151 in the Salt Lake thread. At least until ground has broken.

Is it me, or hasn't there been any work done on the PAC/111 site this past week. Drove past it yesterday and didn't notice any chances if any.

I'm a member of City Creek Gym, so occasionally I'll sit in the jacuzzi overlooking the construction site. This past week they were removing debris and took down some basement structures in 111, so progress was made...just not as much as the weeks prior.

It's fun to see the city change with warm bubbles surrounding you.
