Lahore is closer. But it's not in a -stan either. Admittedly, I had never heard of this place but I liked the picture.

Kashgar, The westernmost city in China. The statue in the back of the 2nd picture is the largest Mao in China. Hmph. I actually kind of expected one of the world travelers on here to know this one, but I guess this thread doesn't get enough traffic.

Well that's St. Pete...just read up on Kashgar and it sounds like a fascinating place. I had no idea there was a city in China so heavily influenced by Islam. That's kind of a forgotten corner of the planet, it seems.

Anyway, I'll take a swing at this here:

Tropical... Looks like a colonial port city
Can't think of too many places where that kind of development would be surprising.
