Hoi An, Vietnam

hoi an is a former river port in central vietnam. it was largely spared by both sides during the war, thus the centre of the town is good place to see older vietnamese architecture

the sign says: chicken-rice in the courtyard. you are respectfully invited.

or something like that...

i decided to walk along this canal to the beach. it took me about 45 minutes, in about 45 degree heat. i am a moron.

every city in vietnam is rigged with speakers. usually they are used to play rousing patriotic songs at 6 am, which everybody hates. when i took this though, they were playing 'moonlight sonata'...

thanks for checking out my photos!

Very interesting town... I would love to visit such a place someday. Sweet photos.

Is it illegal for the little kids to wear helmets in this town?

Gorgeous photos; it looks like a peaceful, pleasant town. This one made me stop and go back and look again. I love the composition, the shapes, the colors, the light.

I remember hearing a returning vet in the seventies saying that if it weren't for the horrors of the war, he'd have to say the Vietnamese countryside and beaches were the most beautiful places he had ever seen.

Rockin I have an acquaintance who was actually imprisoned in Vietnam for a short time due to a passport "mix up," or so he was told.

It always good to see different styles of cities. Thank you for sharing.

Is it just me or do most of the people in the photos where slippers. I have actually noticed that on other Vietnam pics as well.

...sure just call weird.

thanks for your comments!

on december 15th 2007 a law was enacted requiring all motorbike riders to wear helmets. on december 14th, about 15% of riders wore them... on december 15th it jumped to about 95%. the law isn't really enforced for children though, mostly because nobody sells helmets small enough for them...

i took about 6000 or so photos in viet nam this time... i might get around to organizing and re-sizing some more of them if i have some free time...
