Here's e_r's picture with the center margin removed.

And here's a current aerial view looking east. The main studio still stands.

Mack Sennet Studios

Thx e_r and HossC.

Another Mack Sennett triangle-shaped studio, also on Effie Street?

LOL.

I happened across the following three photographs of men in uniform flirting with some pretty girls (by letting them where their hats )

Here's one of the girls standing outside a cocktail lounge while the two military guys look on.

The seller says the photograph were taken in Balboa CA. (20 miles south of Long Beach)

Here's another pose by the same gal. (I wonder if she was an employee or a patron?)

It looks like there might be a semi-circular transom above the doorway.

Girl #2 is standing in front of a different storefront. (I believe it says something "ladies" on the window)

I thought it would be fun to try and locate where exactly the three 1940s snapshot were taken.
__

I didn't realize Balboa had a Fun-Zone akin to the Pike in L.B.

old file / probably from eBay

Does anyone remember a film noir starring Joan Bennett that takes place on Balboa Island? (the film opens with her driving to downtown Los Angeles)
I have some screen-grabs somewhere in my files. I'll have to see if I can locate them again.

I think it says "Tables for Ladies".

Here are a couple of wider shots of the Balboa Pavillion. Although these were undated, I found one of them dated as 1940 by another seller.

Both from eBay

Balboa Pavilion is still standing at the end of Main Street, Newport Beach.

GSV

This shop on the corner of E Balboa Boulevard seems to match the one seen in e_r's first two pictures.

Most of the tiles survive.

Good work Hoss.

So this is the doorway the gal in the hat was posing in front of in my first two photographs (below).

eBay / detail

Can anyone make out the name? Cosby's?

I'm really glad it's still standing. It's a beautiful little building.

This view doesn't show the corner building on the right, but I like that massive black car in front of the pharmacy (it's blocking almost half the pedestrian cross-walk)

I imagine they just ran in for a second to pick up some aspirin.

OK, here's part 2 of my Palisades High School post. This is "Job 3339: Adrian Wilson and Associates, Palisades High School (Los Angeles, Calif.), 1962." Dating from a year after yesterday's post, it shows the completed school. I've only picked a selection of photos - the full set contains five more. We start with this panoramic shot which I've had to lighten. Next to the lamppost on the right is a sign for the Mayfair Market sticking up into the sky - I'll return to it at the bottom of the post.

A closer look at the buildings, track and football field.

It's difficult to tell from the photos here, but I think this is the northern end of a tunnel leading under the road to the sports field.

The simple, shallow zig-zag roofs continue across all the buildings.

Even in 1962, the campus already contained quite a bit of vegetation.

Just like Providence High School, this site has wide, open, gentle stairs.

This is the only interior shot in the set. I'd have liked to have seen some classrooms.

All from Getty Research Institute

The school still stands at 15777 Bowdoin Street, Pacific Palisades. Compare this shot to the third image above. If you ignore the modern vehicles and students' dress, very little has changed

GSV

Finally, I found this 1955 image of the Mayfair Market that I mentioned above. Located on Sunset Boulevard, it's now a branch of Gelson's.

I just came across the following postcards in an old file of mine. (I collected them from eBay a few years ago)

"All Nations Expansion" Assembly, August 13-17, 1947.

ebay

Aerial View of Trailer Camp

ebay

I believe this is the same location as the 1929 auto show fire.

ebay

eBay

Top right, the Immersion Pool. -so where was this located? -was it a municipal pool?

Are those four kids in Lost & Found?

_____

I just did some googlin' and found a couple additional photographs.

Chatting outside the Jehovah Witness tent city, Los Angeles August 14, 1947.

I remember when I was growing up "watchtower" people would periodically come knock on our door. (this was in a tiny town in Illinois)

Every time I see photos of this high school it looks more and more like a Holiday Inn design adapted to be a high school. Replace the gym with an indoor pool and low and behold we have a Holidome version of a Holiday Inn. Cheap and dirty means of designing a school?

I've got to admit Retired_in Texas that the grand and monumental construction photos HossC posted of Pali High were surprising, in that the finished school has always looked so pedestrian and uninspired.

That would be The Reckless Moment, released in 1949. Seems to me we have discussed it here before--but--couldn't find anything.

I don't believe we've seen this postcard on NLA.

eBay

A while back I posted a photograph of one of the class rooms (2nd Grade, 1909)
http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=30851

but I couldn't locate any other images of the exterior of Grant School on NLA.

While fighting with girlfriend Bea Harper (Geraldine Brooks), Ted Darby (Shepperd Strudwick) takes a spill that leads to his death. Desperate to keep her daughter out of jail, Bea's mother, Lucia (Joan Bennett), disposes of the body. Meanwhile, Lucia's suspicions that Ted had sleazy friends are confirmed when gangster Martin Donnelly (James Mason) materializes with the intention of extorting cash from the Darbys. Yet when Martin and Lucia grow increasingly close, the scheme starts to splinter.
Initial release: 1949

My kind of movie.....perfect.

Thanks for the recap CityBoyDoug.

Where do you think this was taken, Chasen's ....Perino's?

old file / eBay

Nope, it was taken on a train; Union Pacific's City of Los Angeles, in the Domeliner "Gold Room". (hence all that "gold" on the table)

Just for fun:

Here's a cut-a-way of Union Pacific's Domeliner. (I have loved cut-a-ways ever since i was a kid) - the Gold Room is located in the center of the rail-car, labeled "private dining".

http://dtxmcclain.tumblr.com/post/56...omeliners-1956

We have discussed the Domeliner numerous times on NLA.
I always remember one comment about how difficult it was to control the temperature inside the Domeliner car.
"it was always swelteringly hot inside."

Yet the foursome in the photograph look pretty comfortable to me .

-perhaps the Gold Room was cooler than the upper level.

My grandmother and her friends had a girls' weekend at Balboa May 3-4, 1947 and stayed at the Balboa Inn, on the left in the above shot Hoss C posted.
