It's not natural, it's artificial. During the AM construction there was removal of debris along the shoreline and once complete, it was regraded and seeded when the parking lot / former parking garage was constructed. But over time the shoreline was neglected. That's like arguing freeway embankments are natural when governments run out of money to care for them. Just look at older photos. It was a muddy mess and I'm sure that soil is probably very contaminated and should be removed.
The Army Corps of Engineers gave the OK on this project. In my opinion they are the ultimate say on what happens to the rivers edge.
