I want to read what the Design Review Committee has to say. I'm all for more infill, but I want to know how this building is going to impact an area so close to UAB.

Was able to get a quick glimpse before BBJ shut me out as to where this project will be, the Wells Fargo Bank drive thru at 18th street and 3rd avenue south, across 18th street from Tazikis. Nice site, just across 3rd avenue from the dual Hilton Hotels. I hope it doesn't look like that picture though.

Regarding the GA Dome, agreed... such a terrible waste.

The City is trying its best to determine what to do with Legion Field. NO ONE wants to see it demolished, and I don't think it will ever cease to exist.

The most popular desire of residents is for it to be respectfully reduced in size, while generally maintaining its historical architecture. Demolishing it would be a slap in the face to college football history, so that will never happen.

Fortunately, the city continues to fund regular maintenance and reasonable improvements to amenities so that it will continue to be a relevant and useful facility. The City Council also seems willing to continue this funding until a final plan for the stadium comes to fruition.

BJCC Reveals Protective Stadium Official Design Plans

here's a link to the PDF presentation: https://uabsports.com/documents/2019...ion_091819.pdf

basically what we saw last week, but some additional images released as well.

i, for one, am relatively satisfied. $174 million was not a lot to work with.

I'm pretty satisfied. As I said in the Southeast forum, it's practically a stadium in a park. No fields of concrete between it and the streets. Plus, it looks like there is ample room to permenantly expand if it ever became warranted. It might become the northern equivalent of Railroad Park / Regions Field. If so, we should expect some great things in the future on the northside.

I'm curious to see if Legion FC will relocate to Protective Stadium once it's built. I don't know what attendance is like at BBVA Field, but it seems like the lower bowl would offer the perfect capacity for some of the more high-profile matches.

I think that Populous really put this stadium in an excellent position to fill it to capacity. In addition, if you really look at the bowls of the stadium, it's easy to see how the stadium can easily be expanded, with little to no disruption.

IMO, if the stadium were to need to expand (I don't anticipate that need in the near term) the eastern upper deck could be extended counterclockwise, likely adding about ~5,000 seats. This expansion, an absolute speculation on my part, would likely be done in a way so that the upper western bowl could be extended clockwise, probably adding ~1,000 seats.

A further, third, expansion, would likely (IMO) involved extending the eastern upper deck further counter-clockwise to meet the northern side of the press box/suite structure. In my estimate, that could maybe add another ~2,000.

I'm quite happy with this design. Looking at it, it just seems like there is ample space to expand (if needed). As it is, I think this is going to be a beautiful stadium in a park that will be perfect for the city's needs, while not slapping down a concrete prairie that you might see in larger cities.

Welp, looks like Ascend is about to push itself up to be the tall boy at the Five Points South intersection. It's already taller than Quinlan Castle and should rise up past Hotel Indigo within a week.

Really looking forward to see how this one stands out.

HUGE news regarding the future of the Powell Avenue Steam Plant (and Parkside in general):

Parkside Development Project

^video above is pretty long, but shows some very cool images about the project.

The pictures do not do this idea justice. If it came to fruition, it would become Birmingham's version of Beale Street. Yea, folks tried to do that with Uptown, and Uptown may very well become more popular once the stadium is finished. However, this new plan makes great use of existing buildings (something Birmignham has a great wealth of) to create social space without having to build too many stucco-walled storefronts to fill in the gaps.

I think if this plan goes forward, it's an even bigger game changer than Railroad Park. I mean, yea, Railroad Park kinda sparked it all, but this just takes it to a whole new level.

Additionally, the fact that there will be a BRT station between Railroad Park and the steam plant makes for a fantastic incentive for folks to use public transit that might not otherwise.

Source: BHAM Wiki

At present, the firm that owns the Brown-Marx Tower is Ascent Hospitality Management Co. LLC. The firm developed the Elyton Hotel and also acquired the "Allright Parking Deck" (I'm just guessing that it is the deck that is the deck on the other side of the parking lot next to Brown-Marx.)

'Ascent' is currently cleaning up Brown-Marx and working to stabilize the building. Of course, the is could mean anything. They could be doing this as a plan to sell, or as a plan to develop the building for a multitude of purposes.

For the article: LINK

Frankly, I think it is a good sign in general that a company is stabilizing the building for future use. It's means that businesspeople know that the building is worth something and are planning to make a buck by either selling it or redeveloping it.
