Urban development approved for Madison Avenue across from SCO
By Tom Bailey/ The Daily Memphian

Quote:
Madison Avenue across from the Southern College of Optometry will look and feel more urban following Wednesday’s approval of a big, four-story apartment building with some commercial space. The Board of Adjustment unanimously approved the 108-unit apartment development that will replace a surface parking lot that now dominates much of the 8.8-acre site and deadens Madison street life... The structure will fill an entire block, stretching from Montgomery on the west to Claybrook on the east with parking in back.

Car ‘vending machine’ now open for all to see
By Tom Bailey/ The Daily Memphian

Quote:
The $5 million building is Carvana’s 23rd car vending machine but just the second in Tennessee; there’s one on the south side of Nashville along Interstate 65... The exotic, eight-story building of glass effectively doubles as a Carvana billboard for 161,000 motorists who pass by daily on I-40 just southwest of Germantown Parkway.

Union Row gets bigger; developers ask for more TIF funds, would waive parking loan
By Jacob Steimer – Staff Reporter, Memphis Business Journal

Story - https://www.bizjournals.com/memphis/...-more-tif.html

Quote:
Union Row’s first phase is now set to cost $239 million more than originally announced and receive $35 million more in incentives... The change would add about 10 acres to the project’s first phase and allow Adams' group to receive up to $185 million of the tax increment the project creates... On Wednesday, Adams said the now-$750 million phase — an overall cost increase of 46 percent — would include 1,110 apartments, 550 hotel rooms, and the same 365,000 square feet of office space... The largest piece of the 10 acres being added to the project is located on the historic Hunt Phelan estate at 533 Beale Street... The DMC has been running short on funds for parking loans. Oswalt said she’s excited to have the $50 million back, and she indicated some of it will be spent near One Commerce Square and AutoZone — where the greatest needs for parking exists.

Additional coverage of the 18 Main proposal.

$1.1 billion development plan announced for Downtown Memphis' Pinch District
Desiree Stennett, Memphis Commercial Appeal

Quote:
The first phase of the project, worth about $600 million, will include 942 residential units, two boutique hotels with a total of 406 rooms, about 170,000 square feet of retail and about 222,000 square feet of office space near St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. A future phase would add 586 more residential units, 530,000 more square feet of office space and 47,000 more square feet for retail... The announcement was made during a presentation before the Shelby County Commission's Economic Development & Tourism committee. It came one day after Intrator was approved for more than $24 million in tax breaks to help fund just over $100 million in projects in Downtown's South Main neighborhood.

Guess I didn't realize FedEx Corp. would be the tenant along with the former Gibson factory. Major signage on 3 city blocks including the arena. Looks great.

Whose skyline is dingy? Just because our city isn't made of glass and plastic doesn't mean we don't have a nice skyline.
