Feeding Deer up Close

On a recent visit to Pinawa, Manitoba, which is about 120 km east north east of Winnipeg, we had the opportunity to feed some of the many deer that are in and around the town.

There are many deer there and while not tame, they have become used to people. We arrived just before a large snow fall of about 14 inches. While the deer fend for themselves very well, its nice to give them a bit of food. There were about 3 different groups of deer that came by over the 4 days we were there.

This was the view out the back window. This one would come and stand by the back window, looking in. They have the most beautiful eyes.

Here she is right up to the window. What a great site.

After a while, a few would feed right out of your hands.

This is the scene that greeted me one day when I opened the front door

On another day it was different group that came for a free meal. As you can see, it was quite a large snow fall.

After they feed, they would just stand there so it was a great opportunity to get some real close up pictures

This one was a bit smaller and had a rounded nose so she was easy to spot when she came by

This one almost got her nose on the camera

After they feed and stood around for a while, they went on their way

Wow thats amazing! Yet kind of disturbing they are that tame around people, they are going to get hurt. Or maybe they were just to lazy to dig through the snow to find food, i know i was to lazy to shovel!

I know what you are saying and I had the very same concern. Quite an large area around the town is a no hunting area and the people watch out for the deer and respect them for the most part. Some people don't care for them but the majoity like to have them there and do watch out for their welfare. What a thrill to see them so close.

Many places, people consider them a nuisance. In summer they ravage gardens and landscaping plants. I've heard of them crashing through windows and tearing around inside a house before finding their way back out.

Wonderful photos, though!

I believe the deer and human populations in Pinawa have learned to co-exist.. for the most part.

Thanks!

That is true, but as Smron says, and he is right, for the most part the deer and people have learned to co-exist. I haven't heard any stories of them crashing through windows from the people we visited there. The one thing I can't forget though is that they were in the area a long time (thousands of years?) before it was settled by us.

On another note, Pinawa was a nuclear reactor research installation for many years but now is used to store radioactive waste well under ground.

If you are going to feed deer food, be honest about it and feed them poison. You're helping to kill them either way.

If you really want to help them sell your home and move into the downtown of your closest city.

I'm not being a smartass either, I am serious. The responsible thing to do is to not feed them so the population naturally limits itself to the feeding capacity of what little land we have left for them.

I understand what you are saying but all they were feed were a couple of apples and a few carrots over the 3 or 4 days as we realized that they could not rely on us for their main source of food. In fact a couple of them were scrapping at the snow to get at the grass in the school yard across the street after they left.
