Looks very similar to the one that currently sits outside the National Gallery in Ottawa... is it the same sculpture?

The spider sculpture is just a placeholder. I believe only 7 of those sculptures exist, and it is unlikely any of the current holders of them would be willing to give them up. Especially for lowly Calgary.

Yes it's real... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contagi...ext_Generation)
Aired March 20th 1989. One of my favorite episodes. Precisely because it very prominently features Toronto, although it is never named as such. It is truly meant to be a strange alien city. Maybe the producers felt that Americans wouldn't notice or something...

Redevelopment, recently approved by the city for the main lots in that picture.

Can you imagine what they could have done had Rob Ford been on the throne back then?

What can you really tell from that pic that would warrant such a dramatic statement?

Would a Yonge St that didn't look like hell still be Yonge St? I have my doubts.

Sidewalks so thin they're practically a joke?

Yonge St was booming today with people, tens of thousands of people. Street was jus humming. In fact all of downtown was busy today . Gorgeous sunny 26c day.

This feels more dramatic. It's not an attractive picture of a dilapidated sretch of Yonge particularly with the broken asphalt front and centre. While, Yonge's sidewalks can be seen at or over capacity, I still wouldn't call them narrow to being joke status. Try some of the local streets in the ED or off Yonge which are see 40 street walls added.

I wish Yonge Street had wider sidewalks. They will eventually have to take away a car lane and make the sidewalks wider with laybys for the cars.

They look super thin in that picture. It's probably a side effect of the height of some of the buildings, or maybe a lens artifact or something.

They are terribly thin. Trust me!

One of the most iconic streets in Canada, and the sidewalks are basically useless.

They aren't really that thin, the picture is a bit deceiving. Think it's the seam in the concrete which makes it look like the edge of sidewalk. However they are over-capacity - Yonge is hard to walk down during busy times of the day. But that's kind of a normal big city thing. I have no doubt that eventually they will get rid of 2 of the traffic lanes and widen the sidewalks. Particularly with a new mayor haha.

I can't begin to fathom how someone would think Yonge looks like hell though. It can be seedy for sure, but that's part of the charm of the street. Not everywhere needs to be super gentrified and full of fancy stores/bars/restaurants.
