I just wished there were better ways to meet people than hookup apps. I'm not particularly against them, but I'm surprised how many people use those apps expecting a relationship or are surprised when someone asks for your dimensions.

^I'm waiting for the day POF changes its name to PlentyOfCock and has a rooster as its symbol. It'd be more fitting.

You should check out Halifax, not being a booster, genuinely think you would enjoy it based on what you said about Montreal.

Jesus, Herald. I am absolutely shocked they printed it. It is probably, by far, the most-read magazine in the province.

Anti-gay letter prompts human rights complaint against Newfoundland Herald

Western Pride NL member Kyle Curnew wants The Newfoundland Herald to issue an apology for publishing a two-page Letter to the Editor in its Aug. 3-9 issue. (CBC)

Quote:
Members of a Newfoundland and Labrador Pride group are so outraged about a two-page anti-gay letter to the editor recently published by an entertainment magazine in the province, they have filed a human rights complaint.

In its Aug. 3-9 issue, The Newfoundland Herald published 'The Coming Christian Revolt' in its Letters to the Editor section.

The letter is a blog post from author and right-wing American blogger Matt Barber, who published the piece on his own website, barbwire.com, last month.

In the letter, Barber took direct aim at a number of topics, including abortion and gay marriage.

Western Pride NL member Kyle Curlew, who initiated filing the complaint, said his "jaw dropped" when he first saw the two-page letter.

"I couldn't even believe that it was published in the Herald. It was a rallying call for people to stand against LGBT rights. Essentially, hate propaganda," Curlew told CBC.

Curlew said after reading the letter, he decided to take the matter to police.

"We filed a human rights complaint under C-46, Section 19, which is 'propaganda and the incitement of hate towards an identifiable group.' So we are hoping to press charges."

Curlew said he feels the long-time publication stepped a little too far outside its role in local media.

"Letters to the Editor in a Newfoundland and Labrador magazine should, for one, include letters from our community here on this island. Not someone who is completely removed from our politics in the [United] States. The other thing, The Newfoundland Herald is a television guide, not a political magazine or a religious magazine. I don't think that kind of discourse belongs in a television guide."

A new gay movie is filming in St. John's.

http://www.vocm.com/mobile/newsartic...48325&latest=1

Quote:
Closet Monster is a coming-of-age drama that tells the story of Oscar Madly, a gay teenager desperate to escape his hometown and broken family. The film stars Connor Jessup, Aaron Abrams, Mary Walsh, and Joanne Kelly.

Though the film is not autobiographical, it is inspired by aspects of Dunn's life. Dunn says he wants to show the city of St. John's as he knows it: a progressive, urban centre.

Gorgeous and impressive, Martin!

*****

So, this weekend I drove to the west coast for a wedding. Two friends of mine, Sarah and Erica, finally tied the knot.

They're second only to my parents in being the most effortless, complimentary couple I've ever known.

It was such a beautiful ceremony. They had it at her grandfather's cottage in a small farming village on the shores of Sandy Lake in the interior.

Heartwrenching. They wrote their own vows, which were just spectacular. And the speeches from their parents made me tear up. So proud and happy.

And one thing I never knew - Erica's sister, the matron of honour, said that she was present the night that Sarah and Erica met at a theatre wrap-up party (Erica was a waitress, Sarah's father was an owner). She overheard Sarah whisper to herself, "I'm going to marry that girl." after they were introduced. Aww!

Anyhow, a few pictures I took at the ceremony/reception...

One hilarious moment: at all weddings in Newfoundland, the single man who catches the garter has to put it on the single woman who catches the bouquet. I only discovered living in Manitoba that this isn't the norm everywhere...

Anyhow, the flower girl (little one in the white dress above) caught the bouquet, and one of the bridesmen caught the garter. Awkward. They played the same striptease-style music while he went up to her, bowed, and handed her the garter as a second wedding souvenir.

Around ~50 000 I think. Read an article recently about it. They're looking toward 60 000 over the next few years. Pride Week started on Friday, there's a surprising amount of events all week. We're going on the Pride History walk tomorrow evening. However, we won't be there for or marching in the parade as we usually do, as this is our last chance to go camping this summer and we're taking it
