I have lived out east in Glencairn, 3 times I've lived just south of downtown in the Transition Area (some pix of it were in Flar's Downtown Regina Thread), lived in south Regina near the University and for most of my life, grew up here in the Cathedral area and although I might be a little biased, this is by far the best neighbourhood in all of Regina hands down IMO. It is very walkable and my parents house were I grew up in the cathedral area, always gets a "walkers paradise" score on www.walkscore.com. One of the few places on the prairies that you could work, shop, dine, etc without needing a car.

Great photos Flar. The Craftsman houses in Vancouver seem to be more distinct too, and a different variety than those of Regina.

Nice nabe! Not far from what I would have pictured if asked to imagine inner-city Regina, except it's older and more colourful than I expected.

why do most of the large street trees have the band/horizontal strip around the trunk?

Those are elm trees, the strip is to protect them from the beetles that cause Dutch Elm disease, which wiped out most of the elm trees in Eastern NA.

There are not many trees out on the Prairies except within cities, so places like Regina and Winnipeg still have lots of big old elm trees.

You did Regina very well Flar! Any chance you'll be heading back out and possibly the Toon?'

Cool thread. This neighborhood looks virtually identical to parts of south Minneapolis. It is like they were seperated at birth.

I looked through this thread again because of your post in the Canadian Neighbourhoods thread... and just a small correction... The beetles that spread Dutch Elm disease can fly, so the wrapping would do nothing to deter them (instead there is a moratorium on individually transporting firewood through or into the city).

What it does combat though are canker worms. In the spring the canker worms crawl up the trees into the canopy and feast on the leaves, then they string down and hang from the trees. So it's a pest in that it destroys the canopy, but also makes the infested area impossible to walk through without getting a face full of the sticky threads. The only problem is if just one person doesn't wrap their tree, the worms can infest all because the canopy is pretty much completely connected.

Definitely enjoyed looking through your photos again though. Might have to make a trip around this neighbourhood in the summer when the trees are in full effect.
