Agreed. I believe the area in and around Poncey-Highland would be a great place to start the densification process.

Well, let's hope you're not a "not in my backyard" then, because you'll definitely see some changes.

Personally, I think the densification process should move a little further west. I think creating a dense, pedestrian friendly corridor along Ponce and North Ave. from Peachtree down to the Beltline and eventually to Highland would do wonders for the connectivity between Midtown, the Highlands, and the Old 4th Ward.

Dense development along Ponce/North in addition to development along Peachtree, 10th St, and the Beltline would create a great square of development which would be easily accessible by foot for a huge number of Atlanta residents.

Maybe it's time for some Singapore style justice around here. You can't have a city when there are people going around robbing people at gunpoint. It doesn't matter what the motives or circumstances are -- that's simply unacceptable.

I can't understand why people continue to walk around after midnight in this area with all the recent crimes. I'm in no way blaming the victims but I think it's pretty clear that it's no longer safe to walk around this area at night.

Atlanta council raises taxes, ends furloughs

Quote:
The average homeowner will see an increase of about $250, according to city officials. That number is based on the average assessed value of an Atlanta home, which is about $240,000.

Exactly!

Virtually without exception all of the greatest public spaces in the Old World were at one time used to make examples out of criminals. I think we should start doing that again.

I've been thinking more about this but don't have the background to fully understand how it works. I know that the spread out infrastructure needed to support low density sprawl is not cost effecitve, but I think there's a lot more to it than that.

Would some of y'all mind talking about this a little more? Thank you!

I love the way the HGI turned out. This is the kind of development that will make the city much more walkable.

Agreed, though I would like to see more Stat's style decks and seating out on the street. Although not a requirement, I've always loved the Boston/European style seating out on the street with the buildings set back a little further.

Agreed. I love the way this area is shaping up. Now, if we could get the Hard Rock Hotel going...

These low and midrise buildings with good street presence add enormously to the urban feel of a city.

I'm not sure what you mean. I was referring to past practices. Public spaces in many old world cities were used to make examples out of criminals via public hangings, beatings, and the like.

Today we'd rather leave the nasty business unseen.

why doesn't Atlanta hang it's street signs on the traffic light masts, instead of putting them on those rickety, hard-to-see poles on corners?

I really hope that they're going to hang some from the masts later. Drivers can't see the street names until they've nearly gone through the intersection. Pedestrians will have to walk nearly the whole block just to check whether that's the right street. (Or maybe my vision is worse than I think.) If nothing else, a large sign hanging from the mast seems a lot more appropriate to the scale of the surroundings.

I'm just glad that they didn't suspend the traffic lights from wires.
