Wait, you're from Chicago??? I thought you're from Pittsburgh...

With that Houston photo being taken in 2005, the left side of downtown looks noticeably different now with new highrises and Discovery Green.

Chicago's grid is one of a kind. It pulls it off so well.

This photo is way before 2005. Minute Maid Park is not in the photo and that opened in 2000

If you look at the details of the photo, it clearly says:

It does look older than the time stamp Tom mentioned. Could the time stamp be incorrect?

TXLove, if you (or someone) are familiar with particular highrises, that might be a way to determine the age of the photo.

Or maybe there's one somewhere from that angle that is clearly recent. It's a great angle because it shows both older and newer parts of downtown.

Who cares whether the time stand is correct or not? It's a cool pic regardless. It really doesn't matter. I didn't even notice I quoted a photo of Houston until it was mentioned...

It really is rather amazing, yeah? Flying in at nigh, I'm always filled with an immense feeling of comfort when I finally see that explosively bright grid. The intense, unforgiving brightness is an unmistakable reminder that I'm home. And you're right; it really is one of a kind. The only other cities, in my experience, and I have flown into every major city in the US at night, that even come close to comparing are NYC and San Fran. But NYC is less impactful because it's surrounded by SO much that is equally as bright. There is a massive gradient of light that begins far outside the city; there just is not the same stark contrast between light and dark. Flying into NYC is impressive in a different way... primarily because it is just so fucking massive. San Fran has a similar light gradient situation. Though I will say that, IMO, it is the closest thing to Chicago's intensely illuminated grid.

Anyway, seeing cities from above is just really fascinating. Such a great thread!

Tom, it's OK if you don't care. And yes, it's a cool photo regardless.

^^^ it's probably the biggest and most dense looking pic of Houston I've seen yet. Reminds me more of the Dallas skyline from that angle.
