Most of the grand plans for redevelopment of the waterfront seem to have been shelved. Sadly. The town could really have used the redevelopment of the waterfront but the plans got crushed and backpedaling by the new council.

We already had the pedestrian bridge to Mac Island killed and I think I read somewhere that Borealis Park is going to go back to its old state.

Fort McMurray "needed" the Waterfront Redevelopment but the Mayor pushed the hugely unpopular downtown arena alongside it as a package deal and managed to kill the whole thing.

Been a while since I have been to Ft Mac., and I am glad to see they are starting to invest in their community. The mentality when I was there last was, I will stay a year or two and make lots of money then leave. The problem is hardly any of them save money and they end up staying ten years. Was a very depressing place back then, but I can see from this thread a lot has changed for the good. Shell place Stadium looks like a great investment into the community!

Very interesting that they are going to be LEED Gold certified.
I guess they had to do Gold because it is after all Golden Buffalo Centre.

Fort McMurray cracks under oil boom’s strain

The tenants have long since vacated the Penhorwood condos on the edge of Fort McMurray’s gritty downtown. Engineers declared the cluster of low-rise apartments unsafe more than three years ago, forcing as many as 300 residents out in the dead of night. Nature has since moved in: So much moisture has seeped into the derelict structures that some units resemble terrariums. Paint and drywall are peeling, walls are bruised with black mould, and windows everywhere have been shattered by vandals.

It’s a jarring example of shoddy boomtown construction. But just across the street stands the flip side to Fort McMurray’s blistering growth: a sprawling recreation centre sponsored by oil giant Syncrude Canada Ltd. Nearby, another gleaming complex is going up, festooned with the insignia of European oil major Royal Dutch Shell. Or there’s the $258-million expansion to the regional airport, which opened this summer to accommodate the legions of oil workers who arrive from across Canada and around the world.

...

Pennhorwood wasn't built during this latest boom it was the last one I believe. As for the spiffy new sports facility across the street, sorry to say that is the College rec centre Not Shell Place. That's a couple of Kms down the Clearwater river on the other side of downtown. But they did get the hospital issue right. though that is finally in the books to be rectified by adding an ambulatory care facility to the north side of town.

what do they teach in journalism school now. at least get the facts right.

So, Penhorwood is coming down. I had never seen a picture of the building, despite all the reports on it. Now I see why. What a dismal little building it was. Yikes.

I had a few projects near by during the time it was going up. We were always hearing how bad that was going. A lot of short cutting-and quite a few guys on site that were not qualified. The inspection service the Municipality used was fired about the time that was finished.

I had an offer in on a unit in 2006, The realtor handed me a copy of the condo docs and I had the review of said documents as a condition of the offer. Well when I read that the pilings were not deep enough and the building had excessive settling I called it off. Thank god I did or I would have been paying $225K mortgage on a mold pile right now.

Did they ever allow people back in to retrieve their personal possessions?
