I'm pretty sure the big birds will land on the west runway since it's the longer one of the two. So watching from the viewing area next to the golf course might not be the best spot. You might just have to find a place across 71 from the airport to sit and watch.

One good spot might be inside the trailer park at Riverside and 71 and 183. You might also try Metropolis Drive. It's pretty close to the west runway and that area sits on a hill about 50 feet higher than 71. So you'd have a good view off to the north where the planes are coming from. You also have to pay attention to which way the wind is blowing. Planes always land into the wind, so if it's coming out fo the north they'll land from the south, in which case you'll need to find a spot on the back side of the airport along 183 some place.

One piece of advice, if you do go out there to watch planes land, bring a jacket because it gets considerably colder out there than in town. I can remember many times when we went to that viewing area that it was warm and comfortable in town, but really pretty cold and windy at that spot next to the airport.

I've been there twice under two months ago. Feels awkward when you're there and there's another group there (or just one person). You do begin to feel "watched" if you stay there when it gets darker.

But as Kevin said, you probably won't be seeing any heavies on the East runway. Makes me wonder why they couldn't build a similar viewing area on the other side.

Good to know its still there, typically there aren't any heavies anyway aside from the occasional Fed Ex DC10. There's really no place to put an observation area on runway 35R / 17R, it pretty much runs parallel to 183. I did park on the shoulder of 183 and was "asked" to leave by APD, so I wouldn't recommend it. Not much consolation, but you can at least see airborne departures and landings of the west runway from a distance from the observation area...bring binoculars. The other people there don't bother me, at least I know I'm not the only geek who likes to view planes taking off and landing
btw, for armchair gawkers, you can always go to you tube, there's quite a few plane spotting videos of ABIA posted.

Me and my friends used to do the same and park along 183 and watch them land but that was before 9/11 and so law enforcement is pretty strict about keeping people from parking along there. It be cool if we had a place like Waynes World and actually have the planes fly right over just before they land.

Taken by YouTuber TexasAviation00. I want to say the spot where he films this is North of the West runway?

Hmm I see. I wonder if it is accessible. That spot looks like it might be fenced in...but what would a cemetery be doing inside an airport's limits?

You could park at Richard Moya Park and walk along that trail in the park. There's one section of the trail that opens up with no trees around, and you'd have a pretty good view of the runway from there. You could just sit down on the trail since it's concrete.

Austin1971,

Any word on when we might see some big-bird charter flights arriving at Gates 2 and/or 3?

I view flightaware pretty frequently and noticed Delta has been sending MD90s instead of the usual 752 to Austin. Weren't they upgauging aircraft?

Last year on the Monday after the race, over 20,000 people were trying to fly out of Austin at the same time. But when they arrived, it was more staggerded, so the smaller jets are sufficient for the staggered arrivals, and larger jets are needed for the mass exodus.
As far as using smaller planes to drive prices up, I don't believe this to be the case. Smaller planes that are full to capacity are more profitable than larger one that are not. So it only makes sense to adjust the aircraft to the demand. Plus, if Delta used that strategy, smaller planes = higher fares, they would lose passengers to the competition with lower fares.

Also several 747's will be arriving and departing beginning Monday to ferry equipment down to Brazil.

Enjoy.....
Good golly, if only I could be there tomorrow.

Also, I passed the airport today on 183 heading towards the COTA, and I noticed that there was a FedEx 727 out on the tarmac south of the terminal, which is probably the one I happened to see last May when I was in line for security. Are we keeping this one for display or somethin' ?

Near-record traffic expected at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport as F1 visitors fly out

By Farzad Mashhood
American-Statesman Staff

The mass exodus of racing fans from around the world began after the U.S. Grand Prix ended Sunday, when most of the private jets left, but peaked Monday when an estimated 21,800 passengers left the airport. The day after the 2012 Grand Prix set the last departure record when 21,823 left. On a typical Monday in November, 15,000 to 17,000 people fly out of Austin, airport spokesman Jim Halbrook said.
